This Sunday (13), Grêmio and Fortaleza met in Porto Alegre for the tenth round of the Brazilian Championship of Serie A and the match ended in a 1-1 draw, goals from Diego Souza and Osvaldo. The game was marked by a tense atmosphere in the second half, which led to the expulsion of Gremista Luiz Fernando and Gabriel Dias, from the visitors’ side.

The result keeps the two teams in the middle of the standings with 12 points and they lose the opportunity to touch the top finishers.

On the next day, the team led by coach Renato Gaúcho will face the team of Palms, while Fortaleza will return to its dominions to play against another team from Rio Grande do Sul, this time against Internacional.

Lost opportunity

Grêmio lost the opportunity to resume the victories path and achieve two consecutive victories, in the last round, a score of 2-0 against Bahia. With that, the team also squandered the opportunity to get close to the top ranked.

Starting team in the field

Even with an important match in the middle of the week, Renato climbed the hosts with practically maximum strength, aiming to score points in the main national tournament. The tricolor gaucho faces Universidad Católica, away from home, for Group E of the Copa Libertadores de América.

Maicon injured

One of the main pieces of the Grêmio squad, midfielder Maicon worries the tricolor fan. That’s because the experienced midfielder left the field in severe pain and was replaced in the first half.

Two tries

Grêmio’s goal came from a penalty at the start of the second half, only Diego Souza had to charge twice for real. This is because in the first attempt the attacker failed and the goal was scored by Luiz Fernando’s rebound, however the athlete invaded the area before the shot and the attempt was canceled by Var.

The best: Osvaldo

In addition to scoring Fortaleza’s goal in the first half, the forward helped with the goal and was León’s main escape valve when he had the ball. The performance was not exemplary, but it was enough to stand out in the technically weak game this Sunday (13).

The worst: the union midfield

The home team’s midfield was far from the best days and the rare occasions Grêmio had throughout the game were spontaneous and individual plays. The lack of intensity in the sector was fundamental to the result.

Grêmio’s performance

The main strategy of the gaucho club was to take forward Diego Souza as a reference and make room for fast players like Everton and Alisson. However, the defending duo of the visiting team behaved very well, especially in the first stage, canceling union occasions.

Strength performance

The team was defensive throughout the match and managed to open the scoring after an unexpected play in the first half. The exaggerated defensive posture compromised the team in the second half and the three points away from home did not reach the group of Rogério Ceni.

Game history

As expected, Grêmio took charge of the initial actions, having more possession of the ball and more time in the opposite field. The main move was to find Diego Souza and create by the ends after the center forward was fired.

However, the team sinned in the submissions and saw Fortaleza open the scoring after a defense error. At 16 minutes, forward Osvaldo crossed the area and the ball entered without anyone approaching the ball – goalkeeper Vanderlei expected a rival header that did not pass.

The “unexpected” goal left those led by Renato Gaúcho more impatient and errors began to increase, mainly in the midfield sector. To make matters worse, the experienced midfielder Maicon felt severe pain and left the pitch in the first stage.

In the second half, the atmosphere heated up after two minutes when the referee signaled a penalty for Grêmio. Diego Souza’s goal changed the rhythm of the game, as the score was already tied.

In the 27th minute, Luiz Fernando and Gabriel Dias were shocked and nearly physically assaulted each other, enough for the referee to show the red card to both, leaving both teams with ten on the field.
