President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) said today that he considers Brazil to be “practically overcoming the pandemic” of the coronavirus. The statement took place during an agenda in Bahia, where he visited the works of the East West Integration Railway, in São Desidério. The official did not mention that COVID-19 has already killed nearly 130,000 people in the country. It is the second worst mark in the world ranking of deaths from disease.
In the speech that ended the event, Bolsonaro also listed measures of the federal government in the economic area that, according to him, minimized the negative effects of the pandemic. It should be remembered that GDP fell by 9.7% in the second quarter and the country entered a recession.
“We are practically overcoming the pandemic. The government has done everything possible to minimize the negative effects, either with emergency aid, which reached 65 million people in Brazil, or with incentives for micro and small businesses, and investing massively in resources so that governors and mayors do not lose their health as well as to attend to possible infected ”.
“We are seeing, it is already beginning to appear, especially in the outside media, that it is difficult to appear here inside, that Brazil was one of the countries that suffered the least from the pandemic, given the measures taken by the federal government.”
Bolsonaro has opted for a narrative that the country would have been a benchmark in the fight against the health crisis caused by covid-19. Three weeks ago he participated in a ceremony at the Planalto Palace, which was baptized as “Brazil winning the covid.” The event ended up functioning as a defense platform for chloroquine.
Without citing sources, the president also said today that foreign media would have praised Brazil. However, the tone observed in some of the main foreign newspapers has been critical of Brazilian politics.
On August 26, the government official had already used the same strategy, stating that, according to his understanding, Brazil was one of the countries that best fought the coronavirus.
Days before, in a ceremony with the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, made a similar statement. “While almost everything closed, we did not stop, we worked and we looked for ways to avoid the destruction of jobs. And the proposals that we presented were exceptional. In my opinion, I did not see in the world who faced this problem better than our government.”
With more than 129 thousand deaths, Brazil is the second country with the highest number of deaths from covid-19 in absolute numbers, only behind the United States. There are more than 4 million registered cases of the disease, the third highest rate in the world.
