BRASILIA – President Jair Bolsonaro must follow the legal advice of the Planalto Palace and veto the section of a bill that grants a millionaire pardon to churches and temples. The government’s economic team also opposes the sanction of the measure. Bolsonaro has until this Friday to sanction the matter and the forecast is that the act will be published in the Official Gazette of the Union at the end of the term.

The proposal was presented by the evangelical group in Congress and benefits religious institutions. According to data from the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic of the National Treasury (PGFN), religious institutions currently have R $ 889 million in debts registered in the Active Federal Debt, considering only pension and tax debts. Not all disputes would be affected by the immunity passed by Congress.

The measure, which had been negotiated since last year, was presented by Congressman David Soares (DEM-SP), son of missionary RR Soares, leader of the International Church of Graça de Deus. The congressman included the proposal in a bill that deals with the rules for the payment of court orders. The maneuver was revealed yesterday by the newspaper “O Estado de S. Paulo”.

The assessment of the president’s legal advisor to justify the veto, according to O GLOBO, is that the measure conflicts with current legislation. Before approval by the Senate, the Attorney General’s Office of the National Treasury (PGFN) recommended that the text of the bill be modified due to “fiscal risk not evaluated,” but it was not addressed.

On Wednesday afternoon, Bolsonaro met for an hour with the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, and with the special secretary of the Federal Treasury, José Barroso Tostes Neto. He also met with federal deputy Marco Feliciano (Republicanos-SP), who is an evangelical pastor.
