The opponents this Wednesday, at 9:30 p.m. (Brasilia time), in Vila Belmiro, Santos and coach Jorge Sampaoli, now at Atlético-MG, have met on the pitch since the beginning of 2020.
After months of waiting for the new coronavirus pandemic, fate placed the opponents of the ninth round of the Brazilian Championship face to face, too, the next day, but off the field. Two “duels” in less than 24 hours.
The case should already be solved, but the pandemic has postponed the end of the fight between the club and the coach. At the beginning of February, Santos and Sampaoli “clashed” in an initial hearing, in the 5th Labor Court of Santos. The second meeting would be in April, but it was postponed to this Thursday, exactly one day after the match between Peixe and Atlético-MG.
The Brazilian vice-champion in 2019, Sampaoli collects Santos the prize for qualifying for the Libertadores 2020, the fine for termination of his contract (R $ 10 million) and the image rights (around R $ 600 thousand).

At the February hearing, with the coach present, the lawyers spoke little. Sampaoli’s defense asked to include in the process the award of the 2020 Libertadores classification, provided for in the coach’s contract.
Therefore, a new hearing was scheduled for the next few months, but the new coronavirus pandemic prevented the discussion in court from being resolved at that time.
Coach Jorge Sampaoli began to collect from Santos, in addition, the fine for termination of his contract (R $ 10 million), alleging that there was a breach of contract due to the four-month delay in the payment of the FGTS (Guarantee Fund for Time of Service). ).
Santos, for his part, argues that the technician resigned in a meeting held on December 9, the day before the expiration of the compensation clause and, therefore, understands that he has the right to be compensated by the technician. Sampaoli says he only formally resigned on the 11th, already without the fine in his contract.
The only time people representing Santos and Jorge Sampaoli met after the 2019 passage was at the hearing in early February. Now, this Wednesday and Thursday, they will face off on and off the field.
