Answering the question of G1 about messages sent by the Brazilian government to the population during the new coronavirus pandemic, the emergency director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Mike Ryan, said that “it is important that people seek various sources of information.”

“The citizens of Brazil and many countries can search and search for information from various sources, and I certainly think it is good to be in a position where you can have absolute confidence in any government, but it is also important that people look for multiple sources of information “, responded the director of emergencies of the WHO, Mike Ryan.

“State governors and state public health officials have been very involved in offering advice and support to communities. There’s the national government, PAHO. [Organização Pan-Americana de Saúde, braço regional da OMS nas Américas] and we [a OMS]Ryan stated.

“Good governments build trust in the community by providing verified and evidence-based information. Because if things go wrong, communities will understand,” said the emergency director.

“But if communities realize that they are getting information that is being politically manipulated, or that it is being handled in a way that distorts the evidence, then, unfortunately, it goes back to government politically at a later stage,” Ryan added.

The WHO has already expressed its views on some of the Brazilian government’s positions. On Friday (4), the organization recalled that “vaccines save lives” when it was asked about a publication of the Communication Secretariat of the Presidency that said that it could not “force anyone” to get vaccinated (watch video).

In May, the organization stressed the need for a “coherent” message to combat the pandemic between the state and federal governments. The statement was also made by Michael Ryan, after the WHO was asked about the reopening of some commercial premises in the country, such as gyms and beauty salons.

“Communities need to hear coherent and consistent messages from leaders, that message must be clear, and governments must follow what they say,” Ryan said.

At the same press conference on Monday, the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that the Covid-19 pandemic “will not be the last” that humanity will face.

“This will not be the last pandemic. History teaches us that outbreaks and pandemics are a reality. But when the next pandemic arrives, the world must be prepared, more than it was this time,” Tedros warned.

He also drew attention to the fact that countries will need to better prepare their health systems.

“In recent years, many countries have made great strides in medicine, but many have neglected their basic public health systems, which are the basis for responding to infectious disease outbreaks,” Tedros said.

“Part of the commitment of each country to rebuild better must therefore be to invest in public health, as an investment in a healthier and safer future,” said the CEO.
