President Bolsonaro must decide in the coming days whether or not to maintain the debt forgiveness
The National Congress approved a text that forgives approximately R $ 1 billion in debts and fines applied by the Federal Treasury to the churches. With the approval of Congress, President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) will have until September 11 to decide whether or not to maintain the benefit for religious temples.
In April this year, Bolsonaro met with José Barroso Testes Neto, special secretary of the Federal Tax Service, and David Soares (DEM-SP), federal deputy and son of missionary RR Soares to discuss the debts of the churches.

Soares is the author of the parliamentary amendment on the forgiveness of debts of religious temples. If Bolsonaro approves it, the debt forgiveness could benefit the International Church of Graça de Deus, founded by the deputy’s father. The church has R $ 37.8 million registered in the Active Federal Debt. The institution also has other millionaire debts that are still in the administrative collection phase. Publicly, Bolsonaro has already argued that he could end the collection of fees still paid by churches in Brazil.
