Pierre Gasly’s surprising and remarkable victory in the Italian Grand Prix was won just over a year after the biggest setback of his career: the descent of RBR to then STR (now AlphaTauri). In the period, Gasly achieved good results in 2019, as second place in Brazil, it is a consistent performance in 2020, delivering points and, in the case of Monza, taking advantage of the circumstances of the race to win. Now victorious, the Frenchman even admits a return to RBR.

– I think I’m ready, but it’s not up to me to make that call. The only thing I’ve done since I was transferred back to STR was focus on myself and show what I can do. When I take the right tools in my hands, I am very happy with the performance we have shown. I’m not just talking about Brazil, but overall, we’ve been very strong most of the time. We’ve had very strong audience ratings, very strong careers since then. We’ll see what happens – said the French.
Despite saying he was ready, Gasly put his feet on the ground and said he intends to focus on delivering good results for AlphaTauri. Regardless, the driver who replaced him in 2019, Alexander Albon, has come under fire at RBR. At Monza, for example, the Thai only ranked 15th:
– At the moment, it’s not something I really want to think about. I just want to enjoy this moment, because it is my first victory in F1. I will have time to think about it later.
Gasly wins the Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix
Interestingly, Gasly repeated on the same track a feat accomplished by four-time champion Sebastian Vettel. In 2008, the German gave the then STR team its only F1 victory at Monza.
– There were many, many strong drivers at STR. I am very happy to be one of the two who achieved a victory for this team. I think good results should be rewarded with something, but we’ll see what happens – he finished.

With the victory at Monza, Gasly jumped to eighth place in the championship with 43 points. Albon, with a car from the second best team in Formula 1 at the moment, has just five more points in the table, in sixth position.
