Replacing the traditional Independence Day parade, President Jair Bolsonaro will participate this Monday morning (7) in a closed event at the Palácio da Alvorada. The adjusted version of the ceremony should have the National Flag hoisted and a brief presentation of the Smoke Squad for about ten minutes.
In the evening, Bolsonaro plans a speech on national radio and television. For the morning event, at 10 a.m., in front of Alvorada, some of the main authorities of Brasilia were invited, such as the mayors of the Chamber, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (DEM -AP), and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Dias Toffoli, as well as ministers of State.
After the disagreement between Maia and the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, was made explicit in the last week, the mayor decided not to attend the celebration at the Palácio da Alvorada. According to Maia’s advisor, he left for Rio this Friday (4) and should only return to the federal capital tomorrow (7), at the end of the day. Last year, he also did not attend the September 7 parade because he was traveling to Qatar.
According to the Special Secretariat for Social Communication (Secom), the event is restricted to the invited authorities and the press. A month ago, the Ministry of Defense ordered the cancellation of the September 7 parade, which celebrates the 198th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence.
In the ordinance, the folder pointed out that, due to the covid-19 pandemic, health authorities do not recommend “promoting events that may generate crowds of people, due to the risk of contamination.” “The current conditions indicate that said recommendation should remain in force during the month of September, thus covering the period of celebration of the 198th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Independence of Brazil,” the document states.
How was it in 2019
Last year, Bolsonaro used the date of September 7 to try to improve his image and react to polls that showed an increase in disapproval from management. The day before, he urged people to take to the streets in green and yellow, in a show of support for the government and what he called “patriotism.”
Bolsonaro followed the traditional Independence Day parade on Esplanada dos Ministérios, along with the leader of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, Bishop Edir Macedo, and the owner and presenter of SBT, Silvio Santos. Also present at the stand were the businessmen Marcelo de Carvalho, presenter and vice president of RedeTV !, and Luciano Hang, owner of Havan.
The 2019 event was marked by the breach of protocol by Bolsonaro, who stepped off the presidential podium and toured the Esplanada dos Ministérios accompanied by security guards and ministers, which took the agents by surprise.
On several occasions, the president put his arms around the then Minister of Justice and Public Security, Sergio Moro. Bolsonaro and Moro greeted the audience, who responded to the shouts of “myth” and “Moro.” Today, they are being investigated in an investigation by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that investigates whether the Chief Executive tried to interfere politically with the Federal Police (PF). The former federal judge left the government in April and brought a series of charges against Bolsonaro.
