Frenchman Pierre Gasly took advantage of a race full of incidents and confusion to win the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza this Sunday. It is the first victory for a Frenchman since Olivier Panis won in Monaco in 1996 and the AlphaTauri team’s first win in the category. Interestingly, when the team was called STR, the only victory came precisely at Monza, in 2008, with Sebastian Vettel. In the closing laps, Gasly withstood a fierce attack from Carlos Sainz Jr. (McLaren), who finished second. Lance Stroll gave Racing Point the first podium in third place.
Gasly benefited from having already made the pit stop when there was a safety car for the retirement of Kevin Magnussen’s car, which allowed him to gain positions, and from a punishment to Lewis Hamilton, who led the race with ease but entered the pits before. opening to the pit stop, which is irregular. Lando Norris finished fourth with the other McLaren, while outgoing Valtteri Bottas was fifth with Mercedes. Renault finished sixth with Daniel Ricciardo and eighth with Esteban Ocon. Daniil Kvyat (AlphaTauri), ninth, and Sergio Pérez (Racing Point), tenth, also scored.
