Texas resident had to undergo surgery for second and third degree burns and the house where he lives was destroyed

American Kate Wise is recovering in an intensive care unit (ICU) after her body caught fire while trying to light a candle inside the house. The case occurred in the city of Round Rock, in the state of Texas (United States).

According to the local channel KVUE, affiliated with the ABC network, Wise had severe burns all over her body. She told the broadcaster that she had used an unbranded hand sanitizer (in Brazil, the most common is alcohol gel), which she had bought to protect herself and her three daughters from the coronavirus.

From the hospital, he sent a video talking about the accident. “It’s something you never want your kids to see – you’re on fire,” she said. “I never wanted them to go through this.”

Kathryn Bonesteel, a friend of Wise, launched a campaign on the GoFundMe website to help her with medical expenses. “Kate put the kids to bed to watch a movie,” he said. “She used the hand sanitizer that she had bought from a reputable store.”

“Soon after, he went to light something in the room and his arm caught fire,” he said. “Before long, there was an explosion as if there had been a bomb. She has burns from head to toe, second and third degree.”

“Two of his daughters ran to a neighbor to call 911,” he continued. “On fire, he took his disabled daughter and her dog out of the house.”

Bonesteel also warned against buying unbranded products. “We are all buying what is readily available,” he said in an interview with KVUE. “We look to stores that we trust, like Amazon, to buy the products we need to protect ourselves and our families.”

The Round Rock Fire Department is still investigating the case.
