The teacher and leader of the MTST (Homeless Workers Movement) housing movement, Guilherme Boulos, 38, will become official this Saturday 4 as PSOL candidate for the City of São Paulo with the possibility of breaking for the first time in more decades with the hegemony of the PT in the left field in the largest city in Brazil.

According to Boulos himself, the campaign will have two fronts. The first, national, aims to consolidate the role cultivated since the 2018 presidential campaign of opposition to President Jair Bolsonaro. The second, local, targets the electorate of the periphery where the poorest population of the city is concentrated.

In both cases Boulos will dispute space with the PT, although he himself assures that the party of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is not his objective in the campaign. “I don’t think that is the point (to fight for space with the PT). My proposal is to present a project that defeats both Bolsonarism and Bruno Covas / João Doria (mayor and governor of São Paulo),” he said.

To reinforce the commitment to the periphery with symbols, Boulos chose a soccer field in the middle of the poor community of Morro da Lua, Campo Limpo, the neighborhood where he lives, for the convention that will make the candidacy official this Saturday.

In addition, he has already announced that, if elected, he intends to create a traveling office in which he intends to dispatch from the periphery. “Your head thinks where your foot steps,” said the candidate.

Another important symbol is the election of the deputy Luiza Erundina (PSOL-SP), 85, as vice-president. Elected mayor of São Paulo by the PT in 1988, Erundina managed the periphery that left visible marks until today, such as the construction of hospitals and the creation of joint housing.

On the other hand, Boulos is betting that national issues amplified by Bolsonaro’s controversial administration will be present in the debate of the municipal election. “This is going to be a national campaign. There is no other way. It is impossible to campaign in 2020 without talking about Bolsonaro. This will be up for debate,” he said.
