During a visit to the city of Eldorado, in the interior of São Paulo, this Friday (4), President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) said that he is asking for support from intermediaries and owners of large supermarket chains to avoid the rise in the value of staples. The video circulates on social media and was posted on the president’s official YouTube channel.
The increase of articles in the basic basket has been debated throughout the country, including by the Association of the Supermarket Sector, which published, on Thursday (3), a letter warning of the increase. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the demand for these foods has grown, precisely because there are more people consuming at home.
In the video, published on social networks, the president asks if the population feels the increase in the price of rice, beans and oil, and says that he is meeting with representatives to discuss the matter. “I just spoke with an intermediary, I will speak with the Supermarket Association soon,” he says.

Bolsonaro still affirms that he will not do anything “in the shout”, and that “nobody will hit” anywhere. Also according to the president, the price increase occurred because the population received the money from emergency aid. “People began to spend a little more, a lot of paper in the market, inflation is coming.”
“We are talking, I ask for a sacrifice, a patriotism, for the large supermarket owners, to keep the price at the lowest profit margin,” he concludes.
Bolsonaro in the Ribeira Valley
The president arrived in Vale do Ribeira on Thursday (3), where he fulfilled the official agenda. He participated in the presentation of the project for a bridge in Pariquera-Açu and another in Eldorado, budgeted at R $ 26 million and scheduled for delivery in 2023. At both events, he appeared without a mask.

This Friday, the president went – without a mask – to have a coffee at a pastry shop in Eldorado. Then he passed by his mother’s house, who lives in the city.
Around 11:30 am, Bolsonaro drove to Registro, where he visited a highway police station. The return to Brasilia was scheduled for this Friday, however, the press office reported that he will remain in the capital of São Paulo, because this Saturday (5) he will visit the new runway at Congonhas airport.
The Military Police reported that Bolsonaro left the Ribeira Valley region on Friday afternoon for the capital.
This was the second time Bolsonaro has visited the region since he was elected. In June 2019, he visited his mother and siblings in Eldorado. He also visited and had lunch in Miracatu, a city that is also located in the Valley.
