A ship with 43 crew members and 5,800 cows sank after issuing a distress call amid Typhoon Maysak that was passing by the west coast of Japan. A single survivor has been rescued so far by the Japanese Coast Guard.

Gulf Livestock 1, which was heading to a port in China, launched a request for help in the early hours of Wednesday (2), when it was 185 km from the Japanese island Amami Oshima, according to France Presse.

Rescuers only met with a 45-year-old Philippine chief of officers Wednesday night, who said he had put on his life jacket and jumped into the water after calling his colleagues on board.

Also according to the sole survivor’s report to date, the ship’s engine stopped and a wave caused the ship to veer before sinking. He said he had not seen other crew members while waiting to be rescued.

The ship left the port of Napier in northeast New Zealand in mid-August and was heading for Tangshan on China’s east coast, according to the Associated Press. Its crew consisted of 39 Filipinos, two New Zealanders and two Australians.

Three Coast Guard vessels, five aircraft and divers are working on the rescue operation.
