Two hours after President Jair Bolsonaro (without party) announcing the allocation of R $ 1.2 billion in fine by Vale for abandoned sections of the Central Atlântica Railroad (FCA) for the construction of the line 2 do Underground Belo Horizonte, the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Low (New) celebrated on social media.

“One more step and the achievement of an old dream of the miners. We will make line 2 of the metro (Calafate-Barreiro) viable in BH. I thank the Federal Government for having prioritized this work, “Zema wrote on Twitter, thanking Bolsonaro, the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, and the mining bank of Brasilia.

According to Bolsonaro, the value of the work will come from an indemnity related to the “return of uneconomic sections of the Central Atlântica Railway.” The new line must connect Calafate with Barreiro.
Also according to Bolsonaro, the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) is working on structuring the metro project, which has become a “national priority.”

On July 24, a decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOU) classified the works of line 2 as an intervention suitable for the Investment Company Program (PPI) of the Federal Government.

According to the State Secretariat for Infrastructure and Mobility (Seinfra), the itinerary will include seven stations. The expectation is that 120 thousand people use the new line daily

Belo Horizonte, which has a population of around 2.5 million, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), has only 19 stations, covering 28.2 kilometers that connect the Vilarinho station, in the Venda Region. Nova, to Eldorado station, in Contagem.

In August, the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, was in Minas Gerais to inaugurate a duplicate section of BR-381 in Nova União, in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, and said the government intended to use Vale’s resources to make the metro viable. The transfer of the mining company, made official last year, is around R $ 1.2 billion.

The fine on the mining company was imposed on behalf of Ferrovia Centro-Atlântica (FCA), administered by the company. The idea is to transfer the billion dollars to the BNDES. Therefore, it would be possible to tailor the partnership with the private sector for the works.

The announcement was made by the senator Carlos Viana, Kalil’s party companion. “Congratulations, Belo Horizonte. We achieved a great victory. Vale’s money will go from the Treasury to finance Line 2 Metro Calafate x Barreiro, ”Viana wrote. Kalil replied, “Good, Senator! Let’s wait. “
