A black kitchen helper was fired after reporting that he was a victim of racism and religious intolerance in a unit of the Hyperadão Atacadão, in the West Zone of Rio. The justification for the dismissal was “having been involved in conflict situations with other employees.”

As GloboNews showed on Monday (31), Nataly Ventura da Silva, 31, said that as soon as she started working at the place, she was already living with discrimination from a colleague.

Identified as Jeferson Emanuel Nascimento, the employee is suspected of having he offended the woman because of her skin color and her religion, which is Candomblé.

The Labor Prosecutor’s Office said the employee was surprised by the phrase “only for whites to use” on an apron. The message was signed and written by Jeferson.

Then the agency filed a lawsuit against the creation of the Carrefour Group. GloboNews had exclusive access to the document.

“I felt smaller than an ant. I felt so bad I cried again, came home crying and put it in my head wondering why, but I don’t have to wonder why.” employee.

In testimony, Jeferson assumed he was the author of the sentence and stated that Nataly only asked to delete the message. According to internal documents of the market itself, the employee had already been accused of racism and assault on another co-worker in the same unit.

“It has to stop. How long will we live in hiding? How long are we going to live cornered by the prejudices of others? I don’t think it’s right, I don’t think it’s fair to me. I was even embarrassed, ”said the kitchen helper.

Even after the employee took the case to the head, the managers did not immediately punish him, only ordered him to erase the words.

Later, Jeferson was fired, but the Labor Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the firing only came after prosecutors began investigating the case.

“I left the company. I went back to the cafeteria to get my belongings, cell phone, medicine bag, charger, and the apron was there. At the same time I took the photo, I photographed it, but I was really upset.”

In the lawsuit against the hypermarket, the Public Ministry wants the payment of compensation of up to R $ 50 million for collective moral damage, in addition to the rehiring of the victim.

For Globonews, the prosecutor Fernanda Barbosa Diniz highlighted the importance of reporting cases of racism in the workplace.

“What we want is for the company to create a safe working environment for its workers. Today, we live in a society only for the use of whites. It is to erase, forget, hide. What we cannot do is continue to perpetuate this practice” said the prosecutor.

Globonews requested an interview for representatives of the Carrefour Group, controller of the Atacadão Hypermarket, but they only sent a note. See the full text below.

“Atacadão acts based on serious diversity policies and strongly rejects any type of discrimination. As soon as it became aware of the case through the Public Ministry of Labor, it opened a rigorous investigation to investigate what happened, which resulted in the dismissal of the employee in question.

The company reinforces that, when the aforementioned episode was reported, the employee had already been fired after a 90-day performance evaluation trial period. Atacadão has an exclusive complaints channel, so that employees can report cases internally and anonymously. ”

GloboNews contacted the official accused of racism and he denied being a racist. He stressed that it was all about playing games in the workplace.
