Mutuípe was the epicenter of an earthquake in Bahia: ‘Electric trio balancing the walls’ – Jornal CORREIO

The earthquake that shook many Bahians at the base on Sunday (30), after an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale, had as its epicenter the city of Mutuípe, in the southwest of the state, about 50 km away . from Tinharé Island, in the lower south. The earthquake (yes, earthquake!) Occurred around 7:30 a.m. and was felt in at least 44 cities in the state, including the capital Salvador.

In the municipality of Muritiba, in Recôncavo, 118 km from Mutuípe, businesswoman Marise Caribé, 39, said that the sensation was that an electric trio – in silent mode, of course – was in front of her house, located on Rua . Belo Vale, in the Center.

“I felt that the bed, the nightstand and the furniture were moving independently. It was as if there was an electric trio on the door of the house swinging the walls and windows, it was the same effect as the trio of vibrating the glass. I was surprised, not quite understanding, but the shaking was real. It looked like a movie, ”said Marise, who felt the movement for up to five seconds. When sharing the fact with friends and family, at least ten compatriots said they felt the same.

224 km away, in Jaguaquara, a municipality that is part of the Jequié micro-region, still in the southwest, two neighbors also registered the tremors.

“I was sleeping and out of nowhere, I felt tremendous business. I thought I was dreaming because it didn’t make sense, there is no earthquake in Bahia. But I realized that something was happening because it was the glass in the window shaking, the things on the shelf coming to the floor, everything colliding. The glass on my side did not fall because I held it “, said 19-year-old law student Nicole Meirelles.

Rural merchant and producer Paulo César Bernardino, 52, was awake, watching television, when he felt the ground shake.

“Suddenly I heard a very loud noise, I thought it was a steamroller going down the street. The windows shake. I went out on the porch of my house and saw that it really was an earthquake. It was very intense here. As it was the first time I had gone through this, I was afraid and I thought something was going to collapse, ”said the merchant. Bernardino said he felt the earthquake for about 25 seconds.

The mayor of Jaguaquara, Giuliano Martinelli, says there has been no communication to the city’s Civil Defense of more serious consequences.

“It was unusual because we were never used to these tremors. Many people called me saying they were sorry, but it didn’t hurt them, it was discreet “says the mayor.

In Mutuípe, the epicenter of the earthquake, Martinelli said there are records of cracks in some properties.

In Cruz das Almas, Lucas Cruz’s window also shook. “I felt the window shake and a big bang for about five to 10 seconds. Then I learned that other nearby cities had the same situation, “he said.

Capital trembled
The earthquake was even noticeable in the Bahian capital, in at least 16 neighborhoods, as recorded by the 22 people who called the Salvador Civil Defense (Codesal).

According to Codesal, there were no reports of serious events or injuries. There were three calls from Daniel Lisboa, two from Ondina, two from Itapuã, three from Caixa D’água, one from Canabrava, one from Ribeira, one from Barris, one from Barreiras, one from Nazaré, one from Trobogy, one from Perrnambués, one from Mata Escura, one from Cabula, one from Cabula VI, one from Dom Avelar and one from Arenoso.

Lawyer Amanda Nobre, 23, woke up to her bed “shaking a lot” in the Brotas neighborhood. “I was very scared because I never would have imagined it was an earthquake. She was thinking that something had fallen off the roof, or a building was falling, or some house was collapsing around her and making the building shake. I was scared, ”said the lawyer to the COURIER. The duration was 20 to 30 seconds, according to Amanda.

The shaking was also felt by two Pituba residents, who felt the bed shake at the same time, around 7:30 a.m. “I woke up to this and felt like someone was taking my bed and rocking me. I thought it was my dog. It was nothing very strong, but it was something I had never felt before, ”said 22-year-old law student Samia Salles.

A similar situation happened to the 22-year-old dental student Beatriz Lima, who lives on the fifteenth floor. “I was lying on the bed and I felt something under me move on the mattress. I thought my bed was possessed ”,

The director of the Ufba Institute of Geosciences, the geologist Olivia Oliveira, does not rule out that the earthquake could happen again, despite the fact that Brazil is at the center of a tectonic plate, the South American one.

“Although Brazil is centered on a tectonic plate, [tremores de terra] they are natural phenomena that can always happen again and we cannot predict them much in advance “, informs the researcher.

See below a note that the Institute revealed about what happened:

“An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale, followed by a smaller magnitude, hit the city of Mutuípe / Bahia on 08/30/20 and was felt in several cities in the interior of the state, and in some neighborhoods of Salvador.

According to the World Seismographic Network, the depth of focus was 10 km. Because it is shallow, the earthquake caused a shock with a notorious tremor in homes, however it has not reached enough magnitude to cause further damage.

The affected region constitutes a seismogenic (earthquake prone) area, reports of earthquakes have been described since the beginning of the last century. The rocks in the region have fractures in which they move relative to each other. As these structures have large dimensions, even movements of a few centimeters, when they occur, release a lot of energy. This energy is then transformed into vibrations and sounds that the population feels.

The UFBA Institute of Geosciences (IGEO) and the Brazilian Society of Geology are aware of the situation ”.
