São Paulo beat Corinthians 2-1, today (30), in Morumbi, for the sixth day of the Brazilian Championship. Under strong heat in the city of São Paulo, the classic was marked by failures of goalkeepers Cássio and Tiago Volpi and had a decisive goal from Brenner at the end of the match. Hernanes and Ramiro scored the other goals of the match.
With the result, São Paulo assumed the vice-leadership of the Brazilian, with 13 points, beating Vasco in the classification table, although with one more game. The leadership belongs to International, with 15. It was also the third consecutive victory for Tricolor. Before the classic, the team led by Fernando Diniz came from victories 1-0 against Sport me Athletic-PR.
Corinthians lost three games undefeated and have not won in two rounds: Tiago Nunes’ team came out of a draw against Fortaleza at home. The defeat leaves the white team with five points in five games, occupying the middle part of the table.
On the next matchday, Corinthians will play again as visitors, against Goiás, at the Serrinha stadium, on Wednesday (2), at 7.15pm. São Paulo will face Atlético-MG, on Thursday (3), at 8 pm, in Mineirão.
Chronology
São Paulo took control of the game in the first 15 minutes. He had more initiative, scoring in attack and not giving Corinthians a chance to attack. And that pressure resulted in the goal that opened the scoring. In the 14th minute, Hernanes launched a free kick in the middle of the goal. Cássio came around the corner and missed the shot.
When he went ahead, the game went the way São Paulo likes it, controlling possession of the ball. Corinthians’ first submission came just at minute 27, with Jô, on a weak shot for easy defense by Tiago Volpi.
However, after the technical stop to hydrate, Corinthians reached a draw. In the 36th minute, Cantillo shot and found Ramiro free on Liziero’s back. He kicked weakly and crossed. Volpi still hit the ball, but let it pass into goal.
In the final stage, the pace of the teams was maintained without much shock. Lots of passing errors and little creativity, influenced by heat wear, left the classic dull.
São Paulo also tested Cássio in two presentations. At 5 minutes, the Corinthians goalkeeper worked on a header from Pablo in the right corner. And seven minutes later, Paulinho Boia kicked for a new defense from goalkeeper Alvinegro.
After 15 minutes and five substitutions, the pace of the classic improved. The best opportunity came from Corinthians in a run by Gustavo Mosquito down the right wing. He invaded the area and kicked crusaders for Volpi’s good defense.
But in the end, São Paulo got the winning goal. After crossing Toró’s left, Brenner finished off with a nice header in the right corner. The two boys decided “made in Cotia”.
The best: Fernando Diniz
Yes, the criticized coach of São Paulo, really. Fernando Diniz does not enter the field, but the substitutions made by the tricolor commander were surgical. And two of them were decisive for the goal that gave São Paulo the victory of Corinthians. Brenner, who replaced Paulinho Boia, scored with a header after receiving a cross from Toró, a replacement for Luciano. In addition, dealing with the absences of Reinaldo and Daniel Alves, he put on the field a team with a much more offensive lineup than one could imagine in a classic.
The worst: goalkeepers
Contrary to what happened in the Majestoso do Paulista Championship, in February of this year, Cássio and Tiago Volpi failed. Corinthians missed a Hernanes free kick in the middle of the goal. São-paulino, on the other hand, did not prevent Ramiro’s weak conclusion from ending up on the net.
Hernanes back and protagonist
The Prophet returned to the São Paulo starting eleven to replace Daniel Alves, who suffered a broken right arm. At 35 he showed his morale by wearing the captain’s belt and made his mark on a free kick. Without supporting the physical rhythm of the classic, he left the field in the 28th minute of the second half for the entry of Luan.
Corinthian fast
Corinthians haven’t won at Morumbi in three years. The last victory of the Alvinegro team at the São Palo stadium was in 2017, for the semifinal of the Paulista Championship. After that, there were three draws and four wins for São Paulo. For Brasileirão, Corinthians’ last away win in Majestoso was in 2010.
The new sao-paulina defense scores the goal, but remains undefeated
The new defending duo from São Paulo lost their invulnerability, but remains undefeated. Diego Costa and Léo Pelé were selected as defensive starters in the last two games: 1-0 against Sport and Athletico-PR. Against Corinthians, the pair took the first goal, with Ramiro appearing between Léo Pelé and Liziero. But the team has not yet lost with this formation.
Here, the interesting note: even with Reinaldo’s embezzlement, Diniz did not move Léo to his original position, preferring to bring Liziero to compose the defensive line. Remembering that, in his best moments at the São Paulo base, Liziero played from the side. As a professional, he ended up migrating to the midfield almost full time.
Reunion with Léo Natel
The classic featured Léo Natel’s reunion with São Paulo. The forward played in the base categories of the tricolor team and was promoted to the professional team in 2017 by Rogério Ceni. He arrived in Corinthians in the middle of the year. He belonged to São Paulo, but had already signed a pre-contract. On the field, his performance was poor and there was little danger on the left side of the attack.
Cassio’s Record
Cássio climbed one more position among the record for matches with the Corinthians jersey. In the loss to São Paulo, the goalkeeper reached the 474-game mark, matching Rivellino for ninth place. Next on the list is Olavo, with 506 games. The athlete who played the most for Corinthians was winger Wladimir, an idol in the 1980s, with 806.
Protest before the game
A group of São Paulo fans organized a protest before the classic, at the entrance to Morumbi. The tracks with criticism extended to the board – President Leco, Raí, Alexandre Bird and Lugano – but also to coach Fernando Diniz and defender Arboleda, who felt a muscle discomfort in yesterday’s training session and did not even relate. Upon the arrival of the bus with the delegation to the stadium, the reception was with shouts of protest in the eyes of the police.
Otero in the field
The classic marked the debut of midfielder Otero, signed from Atlético-MG. The Venezuelan replaced Cantillo in the 15th minute of the second half, but did not change the landscape of the match. Not even his strong kick was tested against Volpi.
