Becoming an endemic disease means that covid-19 can be one of the diseases that affects the population and never completely disappears, as it happens with the flu, measles and even HIV, which causes AIDS. This is a different situation from the Spanish flu, which never recurred after causing a pandemic in the early 20th century.
Ryan also said it is difficult to project how long the new coronavirus will remain in its current circulation, as studies show that the percentage of the population that became infected is still relatively low.
A disease can be classified in the following ways:
Outbreak: It occurs when there is a sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease in a specific region.
Epidemic: Characterized by the appearance of outbreaks in various regions. Be it multiple neighborhoods in one municipality, multiple cities in one state, or many states in one country.
Pandemic: When an epidemic spreads to different regions of the planet and is found on different continents, the situation is considered a pandemic.
Endemic: It does not take into account the number of cases, but the frequency over time. A disease is considered endemic when it occurs over a long period in the same place and may or may not be seasonal. In Brazil, yellow fever is considered endemic in the north, while dengue is considered endemic at certain times of the year.
