The Secretary of State for Health, André Motta Ribeiro, confirmed that Santa Catarina already has 4,332 cases and 78 deaths from the new coronavirus. The update was made during a speech on Thursday afternoon (14). The new numbers mean an increase of 512 cases and five deaths in 24 hours.

The case fatality rate is 1.8%, which leaves the government calm, according to the folder. There are also 2,333 recovered patients, while 1,921 others are characterized as active. Confirmed cases are found in 166 cities, while deaths are distributed in 40 cities.

The last five deaths were of three women, from Criciúma (60 years old), Concórdia (55) and Navegantes (78), of which the last one had a record of comorbidities. The other two are two men, both Laguna residents, 89 and 52 years old. The youngest had a history of comorbidities and died in Bahia.

As usual on Tuesdays and Thursdays, only one statement was made, without answering journalists’ questions, which occurs at press conferences on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Motta reaffirmed dissatisfaction with isolation rates, which are in the 40% range, an increase of just over one percentage point from the past two days.

According to the secretary, “we are well informed” that for the isolation to have a practical effect, that number should be around 70%. “At some point we end up relaxing when we shouldn’t have relaxed … we began to show signs of an unwanted increase in the disease.

The secretary also highlighted the number of cases and deaths per million, and attests that Santa Catarina has 605 cases per 1 million inhabitants and 10.9 deaths also per 1 million inhabitants. In Brazil, there are 777 cases and 53 deaths for every million inhabitants.

However, he stated that management is “convinced that it is doing the right thing”, but also emphasized that it needs “participation of the population”, reaffirming the need to maintain social isolation as much as possible.

ICU bed occupancy

Management also reported that there are 124 patients in intensive care, 74 of whom require mechanical ventilation, 74 are confirmed, and 50 are suspected.

So far, 312 have been discharged from the ICU for nursing and each patient remains, on average, 14.2 days in a bed.

There are currently 1,210 ICU beds across the state, of which 396 are new beds for Covid-19 treatment. In total, the beds have an occupancy rate of 19.66%.

At the table was, along with the secretary, the superintendent of the Ministry of Health in Santa Catarina, Rogério Ribeiro, who said he focused on integrating the federal portfolio with the coordination of the state.

“The flow of information is our main objective here, we know the difficulty we have in relation to Brasilia, due to the complex situation in which we live,” he said.
