Activist Greta Thunberg and other youth linked to the Fridays For Future movement recorded a video calling for international aid to Manaus and the Amazon against the new coronavirus pandemic, after an appeal made by the mayor of Manaus, Arthur Virgílio Neto (PSDB) .
“Manaus is the heart of what is known as the Amazon rainforest,” says Greta. “The consequences of the death of the peoples of the Amazon and the destruction of the Amazon jungle will be global.”
On Twitter, Virgílio celebrated the video. “Our call for the great nations to help Manaus, the capital of the Amazon, to confront the pandemic gains even more strength with the support of the movement Friday for the Future, led by Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg.”
Founder of the youth movement Fridays For Future, Thunberg and her fervent calls for action against climate change captivated the imagination of many young people, but upset some world leaders, such as the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
In March, she said she was likely infected with the coronavirus after traveling to affected countries, but that her symptoms were mild and had not been examined..
