Employees of Inep (National Institute of Educational Studies and Research), the body responsible for carrying out the Enem (National Examination of Secondary Schools), joined other entities and called for the suspension of this year’s testing schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Contrary to most countries, the government of Jair Bolsonaro insists on keeping the dates of Enem even with the increasing number of cases of contagion and the closing of schools across the country. The bodies of students entered on Monday (11) with a court order to postpone the exam.
“The Brazilian society, now presented by the undersigned entities, requires MEC to suspend the schedule foreseen for Enem and wait for the events around the changes imposed by the pandemic, in relation to the return to activities facing the expensive to redefine its implementation, “says the letter, which is also addressed to the Federal Public Ministry and the National Congress.
They also point out that the CNE (National Council of Education) has already explicitly recommended to the ministry and Inep that they supervise the reorganization of the calendars of the educational systems before establishing the schedule for large-scale evaluations, such as Enem. “Given the uncertainty of the moment, the most appropriate would be that such examinations not be applied in 2020,” says the letter.
It also emphasizes that maintaining Enem involves the risk of worsening educational inequalities. All state education networks, which concentrate 87.5% of high school students in the country, interrupted classes. Poorer students face greater difficulties studying remotely and will have fewer opportunities on the exam.
“The performance of school activities through virtual means neglects the fact that a large part of young Brazilians do not have this possibility and the necessary conditions to access and learn the content required in the defining evaluations for the continuation of studies in a higher level, “he notes.
Enem is the main gateway to higher education in the country. The application of the paper test is scheduled for November 1 and 8, and the digital tests for November 22 and 29. Registration was open this Monday and will run until May 22.
“Taking the exams on the scheduled dates, before the pandemic, will prevent thousands of young people from having the possibility of continuing on their way to higher education if we consider the vulnerability of networks and the precarious working conditions of teachers,” he concludes. the letter.
In addition to the Inep servers, the letter signed entities representing federal, state and private universities, student movements, teacher associations and civil society organizations.
