The latest survey by the Ministry of Health, published today, points to 12,400 deaths from the new coronavirus in Brazil, with 881 deaths recorded since yesterday, the highest number in a day since the start of the pandemic. Until then, the record in the country was 751 deaths in 24 hours.

Of the total confirmed deaths, 206 occurred in the last three days; there are another 2,050 under investigation. The portfolio balance also represents 177,589 confirmed cases of covid-19 in the country. From yesterday to today, there were 9,258 new diagnoses of people infected with the virus.

The government also reported that 92,593 (52.1%) patients are being followed up and 72,597 (40.9%) have recovered from the disease.

SP predicts 100,000 cases by the end of the month

São Paulo is the state with the highest number of infected (47,719) and killed by covid-19 (3,949). The scenario projected by the state government indicates that by the end of May SP should have 100,000 infected.

In the interior of São Paulo, the number of coronavirus cases has grown by 99% in the last 11 days. In the first week of May, 151 cities recorded deaths from the disease. Until yesterday, the number had increased to 177 municipalities, which means an increase of 18.5% in ten days. Furthermore, all the cities of São Paulo with more than 70 thousand inhabitants already have cases of covid-19.

Late update on diagnostics

The number of confirmed diagnoses and deaths in the last 24 hours did not necessarily occur on the last day. According to the Ministry of Health, the tail of the tests causes the deaths to be confirmed, on average, one or two weeks after they occurred. OR Twitter It has already identified delays of up to 51 days for official deaths.

Due to this retroactive update, at the start of the pandemic, the actual number of deaths that occurred up to a certain date was double that of the Ministry of Health.

Bolsonaro is the target of protests

A demonstration against President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) in Brasilia this morning, marking International Nurses Day, turned the president into a puppet; the performance had bloodstained claws instead of the hands.

Three people carried a banner with the words: “Those who wash their hands do them in a bowl of blood”, phrase of the playwright Bertolt Brecht.

The protest takes place the same day that Bolsonaro confronts the governors who have announced that they will not follow the decree that extends essential services during the pandemic. Yesterday, the federal government determined that gyms, hair salons, and beauty salons would be added to the list.

4.4 million cases worldwide

The American continent exceeded the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Europe according to data from the WHO (World Health Organization). The figures are drawn by the United States, the current epicenter of the pandemic, and by Brazil, which has entered an accelerated curve of cases and deaths.

According to data published today at 7 a.m., which represents the official cases registered until yesterday, the Americas reached 1.74 million infected people. Europe, on the other hand, is starting to see a slowdown in the number of cases and deaths, which have been halted by Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The continent has 1.73 million cases.
