BRASÍLIA – The newspaper “O Estado de S. Paulo” appealed to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to compel President Jair Twitter to publicize the test he did for Covid-19. According to Bolsonaro, the result was negative, but he never presented the exam. Last Friday, the President of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), João Otávio Noronha, suspended a judicial decision guaranteeing the newspaper’s access to the document.

In the first instance, the Federal Court of São Paulo gave a favorable decision to the newspaper. The Office of the Attorney General (AGU) appealed, but the Federal Regional Court of the 3rd Region (TRF-3), based in São Paulo, maintained its determination. Finally, AGU went to the STJ to request the revocation of the decision, which was accepted by Noronha.

After the first instance decision, the AGU submitted a medical report indicating that Bolsonaro showed no symptoms of Covid-19 and that the two tests he conducted were negative. But federal judge Ana Lúcia Petri Betto, of the 14th Federal Civil Court of São Paulo, determined that AGU must provide the reports of all the examinations carried out by the president for Covid-19. He considered that the medical report “did not fully comply with the court order.”

The controversy surrounding Bolsonaro’s exams began shortly after he returned from a trip to the United States, during which more than 20 members of his team were diagnosed with Covid-19. Among those infected were the head of the Office of Institutional Security, Augusto Heleno, and the special secretary for communication, Fábio Wajngarten. According to the Presidency, Bolsonaro underwent two tests, both in March and with a negative result. Despite the charges, he refuses to show the results publicly.

Since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic in Brazil, Bolsonaro has minimized the effects of the disease and criticized state governments that have implemented measures such as increasing social distance.

Bolsonaro was criticized by authorities and experts for ignoring preventive measures against the new coronavirus when, for example, it caused crowds in pharmacies and bakeries, in addition to greeting supporters with his hands.
