The number of deaths from the new coronavirus in Brazil increased to 11,519 according to the latest update from the Ministry of Health, published today. In the past 24 hours, 396 deaths were recorded.

The portfolio also announced that, so far, the country has registered 168,331 confirmed cases of covid-19. From yesterday to today, there were 5,632 new diagnoses. The government also reported that 82,344 patients are being followed up and 69,232 have recovered from the disease.

The case fatality rate is 6.8%. The mortality rate, calculated per 100,000 inhabitants, is 5.5.

Ceará records the highest number of deaths

With 75 new deaths, the state of Ceará had the highest number of deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours. It was ahead of Rio de Janeiro and Pará (56 new deaths each), and also of São Paulo (34), the state most affected by the pandemic so far.

Ceará remains the northeastern state with more cases and more deaths from the disease, lagging only behind SP and RJ in both respects. Now there are 17,599 official cases and 1,189 deaths in total.

The classification of deaths by state in Brazil had little change from yesterday to today: Piauí and Acre registered three deaths each and, therefore, surpassed the Federal District, which represented two. Mato Grosso do Sul was the only state in the federation that did not record the death of covid-19 on today’s balance sheet, which is not uncommon at the start of the pandemic.

Understand the calculation made by the Ministry of Health.

The number of confirmed diagnoses and deaths in the last 24 hours did not necessarily occur on the last day.

According to the Ministry of Health, deaths and cases may have occurred since the start of the pandemic in the country, but they were only tested as covid-19 between yesterday and today.

Due to this retroactive update, deaths that occurred, for example, a month ago, are counted in the daily calculation, which significantly alters the perception of the progress of the pandemic.

The Minister of Health, Nelson Teich, said today that the guidelines of the folder for the issue of social isolation will be of different approaches for each region of the country, observing factors such as the list of available beds, hospitals and population tests.

Although he announced that he would disclose the actions on isolation today, Teich said the details will be contained in a tool that will not be released until the day after tomorrow. The minister once again said, as on other occasions, that this is not a policy to alleviate quarantine.

“The decision, you know, depends on the states and municipalities. What the Ministry of Health does is provide a line of reasoning,” he said.

The recommended measures range from selective social distance to the maximum restriction of movement of people. The portfolio holder also noted that the strategy will be reviewed frequently and that the guideline also involves talks with states and municipalities.

More than 50% of adults in the risk group: study

A study by Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo) indicates that more than 50% of adults in Brazil (around 86 million people) present at least one of the factors that increase the risk of a serious manifestation of covid-19.

The survey looked at problems such as age, obesity, diabetes and chronic diseases, as well as the number of smokers. Another factor addressed in the research was social inequality.
