New York is investigating 85 cases of an unknown covid-19-related disease caused by the new coronavirus, which has affected children across the state, Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference today.
“The symptoms are similar to toxic shock syndrome [SCT]”Cuomo explained” That [a doença] it is not presented as a normal case of covid-19, because cases of covid-19 tend to be respiratory, “he continued.
The disease, as yet unknown, causes inflammation of the blood vessels and sometimes of the heart, according to the governor.
“It is possible that these cases occurred and were not diagnosed as related to the coronavirus, because they do not resemble covid-19s. It is a situation that has taken the lives of three New Yorkers already,” he recalled.
Cuomo referred to the two children and the teenager who were victims of a rare inflammatory syndrome believed to be related to covid-19. The last death was confirmed last Friday (8) by the governor himself, who said that it is a disease that shares symptoms such as SCT and Kawasaki disease.
The other boy was 7 years old. The teenager’s age was not disclosed.
SCT and Kawasaki disease
Toxic shock syndrome (SCT), according to Dr. Drauzio Varella, is a rare disease caused by some bacterial infections, which trigger a series of serious reactions in the body and can lead to acute kidney failure and death.
Risk factors include open wounds, recent surgery, and even the use of tampons.
Kawasaki disease, which generally affects Asian children between the ages of 2 and 5, is characterized by inflammation of the walls of the blood vessels, caused by proteins produced by the immune system. When they settle, the blood flow is affected, as well as the functioning of the cells that depend on these vessels.
Also according to Dr. Drauzio, the cause of the disease is unknown, but there are some hypotheses: an erroneous immune response of the body (an “auto-attack” of the antibodies) and infections caused by viral diseases, such as covid-19, for example) .
