Since leaving the government on April 24, the former Minister of Justice, Sergio Moro, has been wanted by at least two parties that claim to launch him as a candidate: Pode and PSL. Although seen as a potential presidential in 2022, former judge Lava Jato has avoided the problem.

Analysts and politicians estimate that Moro can break the polarization between Bolsonarism and the left that dominated the last presidential elections, since it must be attacked by both parties.

Responsible for condemning former President Lula, in the Guarujá triplex case, Moro accused Bolsonaro of politically interfering in the change of command of the Federal Police (PF).

He has already testified in this process, which is carried out in the Office of the Attorney General (PGR) and in which it is also determined whether the former magistrate committed the crime of defamatory complaint; if this hypothesis is confirmed, political plans can be achieved.

Defenders of the former minister recall that, in his favor, he has the support of parliamentarians, such as members of the Muda Senado bank, defender of the crime package and the prison after a second instance sentence.

In addition, he has the sympathy of some movements that called for the removal of former President Dilma Rousseff, such as Vem Pra Rua.

What moro thinks

For the parties that sought him out, Moro said that any political movement at this time would be used against him by the Bolsonaristas, who already see him as a potential adversary in 2022.

“He does not want to talk about it (2022), because it would be to provide ammunition to the enemy. At this moment of civic consciousness we are not thinking about an election. But after this stage ends, if there is interest in it, the party will be with the open arms, “he said. Senator Alvaro Dias (Pode-PR).

“His connection is closer to Pode, but the PSL has the plug in the tail. Sérgio Moro divides this Bolsonarista public that is anti-left and fights against corruption,” said Senator Major Olimpio (PSL-SP), party leader. in the Senate and former ally of Bolsonaro.

Through his advice on the parties’ interest in affiliating him, Moro said he would not comment.

Planalto works against the Moro candidate

At Planalto, the perception is that former minister Sérgio Moro is “very sincere,” an expression used by President Jair Bolsonaro himself in a private conversation. The fear that the former head of Lava Jato will divide the votes of the right is fuel for the government to design political strategies.

The government considers that both the speech delivered by Moro when he left the ministry on the 24th and the eight-hour deposition he gave to the Federal Police in Curitiba, as part of the investigation initiated by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to investigate the alleged La interference of the president in the FP are political actions calculated millimetrically.

According to people who attended the ministerial meeting on April 22, cited by Moro in his testimony and in which Bolsonaro allegedly pressured the former minister to change the leadership of the PF, the recording required by the STF minister, Celso de Mello, rapporteur The research does not show much beyond what is already known, but it has the potential to erode the government.

The main reason is blasphemy and other crimes committed by ministers against members of the Supreme Court. According to reports, one of the most exalted would have been the Minister of Education, Abraham Weintraub, although he was not the only one in the room who disrespectfully referred to the magistrates.

The commission may render Moro ineligible

Planalto’s eyes, at this moment, turn to a complaint against Moro made by a group of 14 lawyers in the Presidency’s Public Ethics Committee so that the former minister can be investigated for possible illegal acts during the period in which he occupied The charge. If convicted by the Commission, Moro is not eligible.

The piece is signed by the lawyer Celso Antonio Bandeira de Mello, close to former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and lawyers Mauro Menezes, president of the Commission in the government of Dilma Rousseff, and Marco Aurélio de Carvalho, affiliated to the PT, among others.

The fact that the PT members sign the complaint, according to Planalto sources, gives more force to the strategy, since it would exempt Bolsonaro from participating in the maneuver to remove Moro from the race in 2022.

Another pending issue involving the former minister is the judgment of his impartiality in conducting the processes of Operation Lava Jato, requested by the defense of former President Lula.

Of the five ministers of the Second Panel of the Supreme Court, two (Edson Fachin and Cármen Lúcia) voted in favor of the former judge.

The political capital of Moro.

Although he has been in prison since leaving the government, with the exception of the testimony he gave to the PF and some posts on social media to counter Bolsonaro, Moro still has political capital, according to party leaders.

For the ex-deputy Roberto Freire, president of Citizenship, Moro’s departure from the government can prove him in the liberal sector of the economy and politics. “Moro left Bolsonaro isolated with the extreme right. The former minister has a life of his own,” Freire said.

Senator Alessandro Vieira (Citizenship-SE) believes that it is necessary to wait for the investigations against Bolsonaro to proceed. “Anticipating too much creates a problem that is not necessary now, you have to know exactly how far investigations are going into the behavior of the president,” he said.

He argues that the investigation may “reveal that we have a leadership gap with this (anti-corruption) profile,” Vieira said.

According to him, the flags raised by Bolsonaro for political renewal and the fight against corruption have not been confirmed.

For the businessman Rogério Checker (Novo), one of the founders of the Vem Pra Rua movement, the former minister has the support of the “lavajatistas” groups that called for the dismissal of Dilma Rousseff in 2015. “Moro has a very large capital with these groups and that didn’t change after he left the government. That counts a lot in an eventual candidacy, “Checker said.
