The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in the world reached 4 million this Saturday (9). To date, 187 countries have been affected and more than 275,000 people have died.
The contagion by the virus was reported to the WHO (World Health Organization) on December 31, 2019. Between the notification and January 4, 2020, according to information from the organization itself, at least 44 people had been infected, all in China.
The harsh quarantine applied by the Chinese government was not enough to prevent the virus from leaving China and infecting more than 100,000 people in the next 62 days.
Since then, the speed with which new cases were confirmed has increased to the point that in less than a month it has reached 1 million people. Twelve days later, the number of infected people exceeded 2 million.
When the 2 million mark was reached, the rate at which new cases were recorded stabilized, and within 13 days the world reached 3 million people infected with Sars-CoV2.
Stabilization is now confirmed that more than 4 million cases have been confirmed. Between 3 million and 4 million infected, the time interval was 12 days.
In practice, this means that the world has, on average, 1 million new confirmed cases every 12.3 days.
If the number of new cases maintains this growth rate, by the end of May there will be more than 5 million infected people worldwide.
In April, emerging countries saw jumps in the number of confirmed cases. Russia and Turkey quickly made it to the list of the ten countries most affected by the new coronavirus.
Brazil, however, saw the number of confirmed cases explode, overtook Turkey and today is the eighth most affected country in the world with more than 145,000 infected.
The situation is even more worrying when you look at the number of deaths from the new coronavirus in Brazil. The country is the sixth with the most victims, only behind France, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.
President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) said, more than once, that Brazil could not stop due to the coronavirus. Bolsonaro has already shown himself to be against the quarantine adopted by several Brazilian states and dozens of countries and dismissed the former Minister of Health, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, who defended the WHO’s orientation towards social isolation as the main tool against the disease, in against the will of the chief executive. Last week, Bolsonaro addressed the STF (Supreme Federal Court) together with representatives of the Industry for a surprise meeting with Dias Toffoli, president of the STF, with the aim of obtaining Toffoli’s support for the relaxation of social distance measures. adopted by states and municipalities.
