In exchange for the suspension, Werdum loses to Oleinik by split decision at UFC 249 | combat

There were two years and two months without entering the octagon due to a doping suspension, and the time absent seems to have affected Fabrício Werdum, especially in the first round. This Saturday, on the preliminary undercard at UFC 249, the Brazilian lost to Alexey Oleinik by split decision (29-28, 28-29 and 29-28), by heavyweight (up to 120 kg). After being dominated in the first five minutes, Vai Cavalo balanced the actions in the second round and was superior in the last round, but it was not enough to convince the secondary judges.

Oleinik started more active, playing sequential shots, and connected some of them to the Brazilian’s face. Without fear of falling to the ground, the Russian tried to go down, but Werdum escaped the trail. Oleinik began attacking with uppercuts inside Vai Cavalo’s guard, who faced off to try to contain the pressure of the rival. The Russian’s punches were getting cleaner, and Oleinik sought the transition back, but Werdum defended himself. The perspective did not change. Oleinik was still hitting the Brazilian in the face many times and, in the last few seconds, managed to grab his rival’s back, but did not have time to land the fall.

Werdum tried a guillotine while standing at the start of the round, but was unable to make the necessary adjustments. Oleinik attacked again with a series of punches, but the Brazilian finished and hit good knees. A high kick went into the opponent’s head. Little by little, the Russian grew tired and Werdum grew. With little more than two minutes remaining, Werdum managed to fall and, on the ground, calmly evolved his positions until he reached the rear, but Oleinik managed to escape and stand up. The Russian returned to play many punches and, again, fell back in the last seconds, without much time to work.

At the beginning of the third round, Werdum landed his fall and went backwards. When he tried to transition to the arm, he ended up with Oleinik on guard. The Russian played short, forceless punches, while Vai Cavalo waited for the right moment to attack in kimura. When Oleinik made the move, he defended submission, but he shaved. The Brazilian moved back, looked again for the arm, changed to the saddle and insisted on the arm, but lost his position, and the confrontation was played again on foot. Oleinik attacked with his punches, but the fatigue of the two athletes was already clear. Werdum even managed a takedown with about 30 seconds to go. There was still time for a guillotine, but the timer was reset to zero before the presentation came.

With Oleinik’s victory, the Russian achieved the second consecutive positive result, while Werdum lost the second consecutive.
