This Saturday (9), Brazil reached 10,627 deaths from covid-19. The number is only a reference: we do not know if the actual mortality is two, five, nine times higher due to underreporting and lack of evidence. Meanwhile, the president was seen riding a jet ski in the waters of Lake Paranoá, in Brasilia, after saying that a barbecue, which he had announced during the week, was a lie.
Anyone who despairs of these attitudes, it is good for Jair to get used to: he will continue in this tone “it is a little cold” until the quarantines fall, the pandemic passes or it is prevented.
Talking about a barbecue on Mother’s Day weekend for a society tired of social isolation measures is a stimulus to return to normal in advance. The jet ski stirs the irresponsible chunk on the top floor, which already hosts parties, believing that their bank account gives them health privileges. These actions follow the same line of contaminating fans in demonstrations demanding the return of the dictatorship or greeting passers-by on random visits to the streets of Brasilia.
Bolsonaro can be accused of genocide, but not inconsistent. This has always been your position. There is no difference between this and the pronouncement, on radio and television, on March 24, when he called the pandemic “influenza” and “cold.” Or the CNN interview on March 15, when he called it “hysteria.” Or the statement at an event in Miami, United States, on March 12, in which he was treated as a mere “fantasy”. The disdain for covid-19 has been a critical part of his narrative from the start.
Every day, Bolsonaro does everything possible to bring the Brazilian population back to normal. Not only pressured by a brute part of the economic elite, who sympathize with the “death of the CNPJ” and not by the people, but mainly think about their political future. At the moment, unemployment is part of this crisis. But if he fails to reverse it by 2022, he is unlikely to be reelected.
As long as you pay the emergency aid of R $ 600.00, you will have the sympathy of a poor part of the population, even if the credit goes to the National Congress. The Datafolha survey has already shown an increase in approval among those who earn less than five minimum wages.
For this group, Bolsonaro says that the pandemic will kill some people anyway, but that the numbers announced by his own Ministry of Health are not reliable because they have data from states like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, ruled by opponents. At the same time, his Hate Office bombards false news of empty buried coffins.
As quarantines reduce the death toll, but do not work miracles (even more so with a president encouraging people to go outside), Bolsonaro will always defend that they end up with jobs.
In his narrative, he wins anyway. Even the possibility of “chaos” looming due to unemployment, which he cited today on his social networks, benefits him. If we have looting in search of food and protests against the government, there is little that can prevent the club from going down and taking over once and for all the authoritarianism that transpires through its pores.
For not knowing how to govern, Bolsonaro dedicates himself body and soul to the “Ministry of Truth”, as I warned more than a year ago. Presented in George Orwell’s “1984” novel, it has the function of reformulating history and any news that is contrary to the government itself.
Bolsonaro’s “Ministry of Truth” signals a pandemic and says there is nothing to worry about. He asks us to isolate the elderly without saying how it will be done in the slums. They say that the press and institutions, such as the Federal Supreme Court, are throwing the country into the abyss, when, in fact, it has acted (sometimes) as a brake on its stupidity.
At this point, the president must be thinking about his next media action to demonstrate normality.
Considering the new normal in Brazil, I suggest that it will help dig graves. At least your act will bring something useful.
