The protests take place at another stalemate over the Israeli government. Netanyahu and Benny Gantz, the prime minister’s main political rival, try to hit a broad coalition to rule the country during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Negotiations, however, have not yet resulted. If there is no consensus in the coming days, Israel could go through the four consecutive general elections in just over a year.
In this Sunday’s protest, the protesters asked Gantz to resign from joining Netanyahu. Activists believe the broad coalition could undermine investigations against the current prime minister and increase the powers of the Likud party, which has ruled Israel for a decade.

Shortly after the elections in early March, Covid-19 cases in Israel began to grow, prompting the government to take severe measures to restrict movement and against crowds. Netanyahu’s trial even had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
This Sunday, Israel recorded more than 13,000 cases of Covid-19, according to a survey by Johns Hopkins University. The death toll from the new coronavirus disease reached 172.
