OnePlus made official the new OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro last Tuesday (14). The smartphones represent a real evolution in relation to the previous generation, with better construction, configurations, cameras and screen, and threatens major brand competitors such as Xiaomi, Samsung and Apple for their price less than a thousand dollars.
Does the new OnePlus 8 retain the title of “line killer”? We put the Pro model next to Galaxy S20 Ultra, iPhone 11 Pro Max and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, and the answer you can see below:
screen
- OnePlus 8 Pro: 6.78-inch fluid AMOLED panel, Quad HD + resolution (3168×1440 pixels), 120Hz refresh rate
- Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: 6.9-inch 2X dynamic AMOLED panel, Quad HD + resolution (3200×1440 pixels) and 120Hz refresh rate;
- iPhone 11 Pro Max: 6.5-inch OLED panel, 1242×2688 pixel resolution and 120Hz touch sensitivity;
- Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: 6.67-inch OLED panel, Full HD + resolution (2340×1080 pixels) and 90 Hz refresh rate.
Today we are facing two of the best screens, according to the specialized website DisplayMate. Both the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the OnePlus 8 Pro come with Quad HD + resolution, AMOLED panel and 120 Hz refresh rate. However, the OnePlus model stands out for offering the option of using 120 Hz at maximum resolution, a function not available on S20 Ultra.
The Mi 10 Pro brings a Full HD + 90 Hz display, which is slightly lower than the models mentioned above, but which nevertheless brings a considerable improvement in the fluidity of content and navigation. As of 2019, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is the only one with 60 Hz and ranks last.
Processor
- OnePlus 8 Pro: Snapdragon 865 5G (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 585 + 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 585 + 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 585)
-
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: United States: Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 585 and 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 585 and 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 585)
Global: Exynos 990 5G (2×2.73 GHz Mongoose M5 and 2×2.50 GHz Cortex-A76 and 4×2.0 GHz Cortex-A55); - iPhone 11 Pro Max: Apple A13 Bionic (2×2.65 GHz Lightning + 4×1.8 GHz Thunder);
- Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: Snapdragon 865 5G (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 585 + 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 585 + 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 585)
Since we are dealing with top-of-the-line smartphones, there is currently nothing available that they cannot do. Although the S20 Ultra variant with Exynos 990 5G is inferior in all benchmark tests, in practice the difference is barely noticeable.
Perhaps the most notable difference is the unavailability of the 5G network on the A13 Bionic, as it is a processor from last year: the next A14 should bring the technology.
RAM and storage
- OnePlus 8 Pro: 8 GB of RAM + 128 GB or 12 GB of RAM + 256 GB;
- Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: 12 GB of RAM + 128 GB or 512 GB;
- iPhone 11 Pro Max: 4 GB of RAM + 64, 256 or 512 GB;
- Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: 8GB RAM + 256GB, 12GB RAM + 256GB, or 12GB RAM + 512GB.
The four smartphones have quite varied options, although the Mi 10 Pro brings an additional variant. One downside to OnePlus 8 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max is the unavailability of the memory card slot, forcing the user to spend more for more storage.
Despite bringing “only” 4GB of RAM, the iPhone has a much more optimized operating system than Android, making the numbers negligible. The warranty is long lasting on all four devices.
Cameras
-
OnePlus 8 Pro: 48 MP main camera, f / 1.8, PDAF, Laser AF, OIS
8 MP telephoto lens, f / 2.4, PDAF, OIS, 3x optical zoom
48 MP ultra wide, f / 2.2, PDAF

16 MP front camera -
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: 108 MP, f / 1.8, PDAF, OIS
48 MP periscope, f / 3.5, PDAF, OIS, 10x hybrid zoom
12 MP Ultrawide, f / 2.2, super stable video

40 MP front camera -
iPhone 11 Pro Max: 12 MP main camera, f / 1.8, dual pixel PDAF, OIS
12 MP telephoto lens, f / 2.0, PDAF, OIS, 2x optical zoom

12 MP front camera -
Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: 108 MP main camera, f / 1.7, PDAF, Laser AF, OIS
8 MP telephoto, f / 2.0, PDAF, laser AF, OIS, hybrid zoom up to 10x
12 MP portrait, f / 2.0, Dual Pixel, up to 2x optical zoom
20 MP ultra wide, f / 2.2
20 MP front camera
Among so many highlights of the OnePlus line, the photo set was never one of them, but that may be about to change. With a focus on cameras, the new OnePlus 8 Pro has settings very similar to its “cousin”, Oppo’s Find X2 Pro, which was once the king of photography.
However, the match is tough, and both the S20 Ultra and the Mi 10 Pro have one of the most powerful sensors on the market, at 108 MP. Regardless of the version chosen, the guarantee is for spectacular images and full of details.
Drums
- OnePlus 8 Pro: 4,510 mAh battery with fast charge and 30 W wireless
- Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast charge and 15 W wireless connection
- iPhone 11 Pro Max: 3,969 mAh battery with 18 W fast charge and wireless
- Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: 4,500 mAh battery with 50 W fast charge and 30 W wireless connection
Regarding the battery, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is the one that offers the largest capacity, but the one that stands out is the iPhone 11 Pro Max with its very well optimized software. The OnePlus 8 Pro’s battery life also promises to be long, as there are no major software changes or unnecessary applications.
The great news of the OnePlus 8 Pro is the presence of support for wireless charging, which is already present in the competition from previous generations.
Extras and software
- OnePlus 8 Pro: IP68 certified, Bluetooth 5.1, 5G, NFC, under-screen digital reader, USB 3.1, Android 10
- Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: IP68 certified, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB-C 3.2, under-screen digital reader, FM radio, Android 10
- iPhone 11 Pro Max: Face ID, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB 2.0, iOS 13.4
- Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, USB 2.0, under-screen digital reader, Android 10
Another novelty presented by OnePlus 8 Pro is the IP68 certification (resistance against water and dust), also present in the competition, with the exception of the Mi 10 Pro. Unfortunately, the OnePlus model does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack, while the S20 Ultra even has an FM radio.
Prices
- OnePlus 8 Pro: $ 999 (around R $ 5,200)
- Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: $ 1,399 (around R $ 7,300)
- iPhone 11 Pro Max: from $ 1,099 (about $ 5,750)
- Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: about $ 850 in direct conversion (or $ 3,750)
Price is perhaps the main deciding factor when buying. The most expensive OnePlus model costs $ 1,000, $ 300 less than the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which came in at a whopping $ 1,399.
The most expensive version of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, released in 2019, exceeds $ 1,100, although we are already used to the abusive prices charged by Apple.
Who really stands out is the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, which is one of the cheapest 5G line caps on the market.
