Close to the ground? Asteroid made “the closest approach ever seen”

NLast week we learned that the 1998 OR2 asteroid passed through Earth but, according to the New Atlas, there was an asteroid that passed even closer to our planet on the 28th.

2020 HS7 does not have the same dimension as 1998 OR2. In fact, it is only eight meters in diameter which, if it were on a collision course with Earth, would only destroy it. However, the European Space Agency says that the asteroid had only a 10% chance of reaching our planet.

The greatest risk posed by 2020 HS7 was for the satellite communications network. According to the space agency, the asteroid in question passed some 42,000 kilometers from Earth and only 1,200 kilometers from a satellite of the European Data Transmission System network.

For the European agency, this was “the closest flight ever recorded”, a somewhat embarrassing situation since the asteroid was detected only on April 27 by the Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS).
