Rio de Janeiro state governor Wilson Witzel said Monday night (4) that he is studying sanctions for people who ignore social isolation measures to combat Covid-19.

In an interview with TV Cultura’s Roda Viva program, the governor said he would discuss the possible application of fines at a meeting with the prosecutor on Tuesday (5).

“The big problem now is people on the street (…) I spoke with the Public Ministry and we schedule a meeting tomorrow to discuss these measures that can be adopted for people who do not observe the need to stay home and may suffer some Samson’s guy, “said Wilson Witzel.

“A lot of people are going out on the street. We have something like 50% of these people on the street, when it should be less for the essential activities they are working on. This has hampered control of the pandemic. We need an even greater reduction in the scale of contagion and hospitalizations, “added the governor.

The Rio governor also said that the state’s military and civil police would participate in the sanction process.

Possibility of ‘blocking’

When asked about the possibility of determining the ‘block’ [bloqueio total] In Rio de Janeiro state, the governor of Rio said the measure is a possibility. “It is one of the solutions that can be adopted,” said Witzel.

He also said that the strategy should be discussed with the competent agencies before being implemented.

“This problem of the term blockade does not exist in our legislation. The construction of these measures will require a debate with the Public Ministry and the Office of the Public Defender to establish the necessary rules for a greater restriction with people. ”

Extensive social isolation measures in RJ

Last Thursday (30), Governor Witzel announced, together with the Rio city council, the extension of social isolation measures to combat Covid-19. In the municipality, the restrictions go until May 15 and in the state until 11.

Governor Wilson Witzel’s decree published in the Official Gazette this Thursday extends the bans until May 11.

“The mortality and pollution curve is still high, despite being under control. Exactly because it is under control, we are very concerned about any reopening of economic activity. I know the difficulties, I know the problems we are all going through, but Although we are not opening the field hospitals, which are in the final stages of completion, we will not be able to reopen them. 70% of the ICU bed occupancy is the maximum we can allow for reopening. And, unfortunately , we are not at that level yet, “explained the governor.
