Dozens of bodies in various stages of decomposition were found in moving trucks without refrigeration outside a New York funeral home, after neighbors reported police to the stench.
The New York State Government and the Brooklyn District Attorney are investigating the Andrew T. Cleckley Funeral Home in this New York district, which owns these trucks and was supposed to handle the bodies.
New York police confirmed to AFP that they received a call from a resident at noon Wednesday to complain about the stench from the trucks.
Police went to the scene and found about 60 bodies, according to city media.
“This horrible situation that occurred at this Brooklyn funeral home is absolutely unacceptable. Let’s be clear, ”Mayor Bill de Blasio told the press on Thursday (30).
“Funeral homes are private organizations. They have an obligation to the people they serve, they must treat them with dignity. I have no idea why they let this happen, “he added.
State government health commissioner Howard Zucker said he is investigating what happened and so far there have been no complaints about this funeral home.
“This is a message for all funeral homes: We will not tolerate this type of behavior,” Zucker said Thursday at Governor Andrew Cuomo’s daily press conference.
Funeral home owner Andrew T. Cleckley told The New York Times on Thursday that, like other workers in the industry, he is overwhelmed by the pandemic.
He said he used the trucks to store bodies, but only after filling his storage area with more than 100 bodies.
“I ran out of space,” Cleckley said, adding that only in April did he receive more bodies than in all of 2019. “The bodies are everywhere.”
New York, the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, has recorded more than 17,820 deaths since March. Morgues, funeral homes, crematoriums and cemeteries are working beyond their means and guarantee that they cannot handle it.
