Brazil registers more than 65 thousand cases of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and more than 4,500 deaths are added, according to daily updates from the Ministry of Health. In the COVID-19 scenario, all Brazilian states already register cases and deaths from the disease, however, the situation in the municipalities is different, with only one in five patients infected.

Until the time of the epidemic, COVID-19 is concentrated in large and medium-sized cities, according to a survey carried out by the O Globo newspaper. To reach these figures, the data collected by the Ministry of Health and cross-referenced with the 2019 population estimate made by IBGE, reveal that, until April 16, of the 324 cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, only 14 no cases of the new coronavirus were recorded.

One of these cases is Arapiraca, in the state of Alagoas, with 231,747 inhabitants and without confirmation, until the 16th of this month. Meanwhile, among the 3,796 municipalities with an occupation of less than 20,000 people, COVID-19 did not reach 92% of them.

Municipalities Division

Counting the 5,570 municipalities in the country, including Brasilia and Fernando de Noronha, 1,171 already register cases of respiratory infection. In addition, it is possible to affirm that the bigger the size of the city, also increases the possibility that some of its residents have contracted the coronavirus.

When analyzing municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants and non-capitals, the highest incidence is found in Santos, a city on the coast of São Paulo. Of the 30 cities with the highest incidence rates, the only ones that are not capital and are not in the metropolitan capital region are: Santos (6th); Volta Redona-RJ (13º); Balneário Camboriú-SC (15º); Ilhéus-BA (24); Tubarão-SC (29).

Among the 349 municipalities with populations between 50 and 100,000, approximately a third of them (118 cities), had no case of COVID-19. Among them, the largest is Manacapuru, in the state of Amazonas, with 97,377 inhabitants, which nevertheless occupies the third national place in incidence rate.

Fernando de Noronha, which is counted as a municipality only for statistical purposes, is in the first position: with 24 cases for April 16 and a population of 3,061 inhabitants, that is, its rate is 7,840.6 cases per 1 million people. population

Among the 1,101 municipalities with a population between 20 and 50 thousand, 70% (771 cities) did not register patients with the coronavirus. In this case, a small number of cases is sufficient for the incidence rate, which is calculated according to the population, to increase considerably. For example, Anhanguera, in the state of Goiás, with a single case, in a municipality of 1,149 inhabitants, reached the seventh national position in the incidence of COVID-19.
