Next Wednesday (29), an asteroid approximately 2 kilometers long will cross Earth’s sky.
If you have a telescope, be careful: (52768) 1998 OR2 will be visible from 6:56 am Brasilia time. To good observers, it will look like a star moving very slowly.
In fact, it will travel more than 30,000 kilometers per hour. The asteroid is classified as “potentially dangerous”, but there is no reason for concern, according to NASA: it will pass six million kilometers from us. This is more than 16 times the distance from Earth to the Moon.
The classification of potentially dangerous is given by its size: if it were on a collision course with our planet, it would cause considerable damage worldwide.
For amateur astronomers, the EarthSky organization has made celestial maps available to facilitate the location of the asteroid. Even those without a telescope will be able to observe the object crossing the sky: the virtual telescope project will provide a live broadcast directly from Rome.
