The President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (without a party), will sleep this Sunday with bitter results in the 2020 municipal elections. Of the 12 mayoral candidates supported by Bolsonaro in their weekly “lives”, only four were elected or passed to Second round.
In the main electoral colleges of the country, Bolsonaro’s only victory was in Rio de Janeiro, where the current mayor, Marcelo Crivella (Republicans), recovered and will run for the second round against Eduardo Paes (DEM).
Since Monday (11/09), Bolsonaro has made four “lives” to present candidates. For mayors alone, Bolsonaro and his ministers endorsed a dozen names.
The best known are the federal deputy Celso Russomanno (Republicans), candidate in São Paulo (SP); and Crivella, in Rio. But Bolsonaro also supported candidates in other capitals: Capitão Wagner (from Pros, in Fortaleza); Patrícia Patrícia (Pode, in Recife); Colonel Menezes (in Manaus, for Patriota); and Bruno Engler (in Belo Horizonte, PRTB).
Of these, Bolsonaro only scored Crivella and Capitão Wagner. The latter obtained 33% of the votes and will run in the second round in the capital of Ceará against José Sarto (PDT). In São Paulo, Celso Russomanno came in fourth place, with only 10.5% of the votes.
Bolsonaro also supported the current mayor of Parnaíba (PI), Mão Santa (DEM), who won reelection with 68% of the votes. The other success was in Ipatinga (MG), where the young Gustavo Nunes was elected mayor by the PSL.
Minister Damares Alves (Women, Family and Human Rights) took advantage of a gathering with Bolsonaro to support the Emedebista candidate Morgana Macena, who ran for mayor of Cabedelo (PB) and was defeated. The candidates Ivan Sartori (from the PSD, in Santos) also appeared on the president’s “electoral calendar”; Oscar Rodrigues (for the MDB, in Sobral); and Julia Zanatta (in Criciúma, for the PL). They all failed.
Bolsonaro also used lives to support candidates for councilor, including his former assistant at the time of federal deputy, Walderice Santos da Conceição, Wal do Açaí. She ran for a seat on the Angra dos Reis (RJ) City Council for Republicans, but she only had 266 votes and was not elected.
In Mato Grosso, the President of the Republic tried to secure an additional seat in the Senate: Bolsonaro supported the name of Rúbia Fernanda Diniz Siqueira, Colonel Fernanda (Patriota), in the supplementary election for the Upper House. However, until the closing of this report, the results obtained by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) were not conclusive.
Since Monday, Bolsonaro has earned four lives promoting his candidates. In general, the videos were just over 40 minutes long; the exception was the last live, on Thursday (11/12), when Bolsonaro spoke for just over an hour and a half.
Some of the candidates even traveled to Brasilia to appear alongside the president: Bruno Engler (from Belo Horizonte) and Coronel Menezes (Manaus), among others, did so. Both failed at the polls.
In total, Bolsonaro announced at least 59 candidates for mayor or councilman in their lives, according to a survey by the G1 website.
For the political scientist Bruno Carazza, Bolsonaro, however, Bolsonaro’s role in the municipal elections was not so decisive, despite some failures such as Russomanno’s.
“Many people made the initial reading, mainly because of Russomanno’s failure, that Bolsonaro was not a good electoral limit. But I don’t see it that way. Crivella’s recovery in Rio de Janeiro is an indication of Bolsonaro’s strength. His candidate in Belo Horizonte (Bruno Engler) also performed better than the polls showed, indicating that he knew how to mobilize people in the final stretch, “said Carazza, who is the author of the book Dinheiro, elections and power, on the financing of political disputes in Brazil.
“By not launching the party (the Alliance for Freedom), he can now say that the failures are not his fault. At the same time, he will capitalize on the eventual victories that arise,” says the political scientist, professor at Fundação Dom Cabral and Ibmec .
Bolsonaro: the left suffered a historic defeat
Shortly before midnight, Bolsonaro used his Twitter account to comment on the election results. The president said that his participation in the elections was reduced to “four lives in a total of three hours.”
“Four years ago, Geraldo Alckmin elected João Dória mayor of São Paulo in the first round. Two years later, Alckmin obtained only 4.7% of the votes in the presidential race. My help to a few mayoral candidates was limited to 4 lives in total 3 hours, “he wrote.
“The left suffered a historic defeat in these elections, in a clear sign that the conservative wave came in 2018 to stay. By 2022 the certainty that, at the polls, we will consolidate our democracy with an improved electoral system. GOD, COUNTRY and FAMILY, “Bolsonaro said.
Prosecutor will investigate irregular advertising
The ‘informal election time’ promoted by Bolsonaro in their lives may have other consequences. In several states, the Federal Public Ministry decided to investigate whether the president committed irregular electoral campaigns during the broadcasts.
The parliamentarians of the PT and the Rede Sustentabilidade questioned the Electoral Attorney General, Renato Brill de Góes, about the legality of the president’s life.
The Network also submitted a question about the use of the Palácio da Alvorada in the recordings to the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU). Despite its name, TCU is an advisory body to Congress and is not part of the Judiciary.
Based on the request of the parliamentarians, Renato Brill de Góes ordered the opening of investigations on the matter in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, Pernambuco, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Piauí , Roraima and Sergipe. There is also an ongoing investigation in Rio de Janeiro, where Bolsonaro supported Marcelo Crivella.
On Friday (13), Bolsonaro announced on a social network that he would no longer hold a “live election” because, according to him, the legislation is not clear about the possibility of using the tool a few days before the elections. “Today there will be no ‘electoral’ alive. The legislation is not clear about its implementation as of this date. Good evening everyone, ”Bolsonaro wrote.
