Arma was in the house of the children’s aunt in Betim; was charged with involuntary manslaughter, illegal possession of a firearm and lack of caution in protecting a weapon
A 29-year-old woman was charged with manslaughter after her 10-year-old nephew killed his 9-year-old cousin with a firearm at their home in Betim, in the Belo Horizonte metropolitan region. The children were playing at the time of the shooting. The Civil Police also accused the children’s aunt of illegal possession of a firearm and of not having taken precautions when protecting the weapon.
According to the corporation, the boys spent a few days at their aunt’s house, in the Recreio dos Caiçaras neighborhood. The night before the event, which took place on November 19, the children found the weapons – a 38 caliber revolver and a 40 pistol, loaded and shaved – on the sofa while the woman slept. The cousins played with the guns and replaced them on the couch.
The next morning, the aunt left home for a medical consultation and left the children in the care of a 16-year-old teenager. While the teenager was showering, the boys again took their weapons off the couch and started playing, until the older one shot the younger one.
“The victim was playing with the gun, and the boy who shot, was playing with the revolver. Suddenly, he pulls the trigger and hits the victim’s back, who dies. The child puts the revolver back on the sofa and calls the teenager, ”explains the policeman of the Betim Homicide Police, Otávio de Carvalho. The Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) was called, but the boy did not resist.
According to the Civil Police, after learning of the incident, the children’s aunt fled and the corporation only managed to intimidate her about 30 days after the crime. The woman told police officers that the weapons belonged to her ex-partner, who was involved in the crime and was killed in April this year, and that she did not know they were in the house. But investigations indicate that he did have knowledge of the location of the weapons.
“The weapons were very easy to access, stored in the front part of the sofa in the living room, just lift a cloth that children had access to,” says the delegate.
The child who did the injection does not respond for the fact, being less than 12 years old. The children’s aunt was charged with the crimes of homicide, illegal possession of a firearm and lack of caution in the custody of a firearm, but was not arrested. She has a permanent residence and works as a daily cleaner and was very upset by what happened.
The chief Otávio de Carvalho calls attention to the need for houses with weapons and children to redouble their care. “Where there is a firearm and a child, there must be due caution and the weapon must be stored safely so that events like this do not occur. There is a presidential decree that regulates it, the weapon must be kept in a safe place, locked and secret ”, he concludes.
