The 10-year-old Leonardo Barbosa died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation, according to experts from the Criminalistics Institute (IC) of the Federal District Civil Police (PCDF). The victim could not leave the burned house in Planaltina this Monday morning (10/5). The boy’s mother, Luzinete Barbosa, 49, is admitted to the Planaltina Regional Hospital with burns to her arms and legs.

Despite the preliminary findings, the final IC report, including the location, which can pinpoint what caused the flames, should be completed in 40 days. The first information, given by witnesses who live near the house where the tragedy occurred, is that the boy was playing with a box of matches, making a fire on the residence grounds, the night before the fire.

In the next few days, Leonardo’s grandmother, the owner of the property, must be heard at Police Station 16 (Planaltina), which is investigating the case.

In great pain due to burns, Leonardo’s mother should be listened to only during the week: he is admitted to the Regional Hospital of Asa Norte (Hran).

The structure of the residence was condemned by the Civil Defense and must be demolished. The amount of flammable objects in the area, such as wood and plastic, helped increase the flames.

Fight against fire

The Federal District Fire Department (CBMDF) was called to respond to the incident and managed to contain the flames around 12:10 pm, however, it found the death of Leonardo Barbosa shortly after. Only mother and son were in the residence at the time the flames seized the place. The boy’s maternal grandmother, the owner of the house, had left the place hours earlier.

The house affected by the fire was made of masonry and had four rooms, but the flames consumed it completely.
