A court granted pretrial detention to two defendants in a case of rape of a housewife by tying up her husband in the dormitory of MC (Murarichand) College in Sylhet. However, during the pre-trial detention hearing, no lawyer for defendants Saifur Rahman and Arjun Laskar filed a judicial petition with the court. During the hearing, the court judge was unable to find any lawyer for the main defendants, Saifur and Arjun, and wanted to know their statements. At the time, they told the court: ‘We are not involved in the bedroom incident. We did not commit any crime. Rajan, Tareq and Ainuddin caused this incident.
Shahparan OC Police Station (Investigation) Indranil Bhattacharya requested a seven-day pre-trial detention, but the judge granted him a five-day pre-trial detention.
The police were deployed in the court area from 11 a.m. on Monday (September 26) to prevent any adverse incidents. Saifur and Arjun were taken to court at 11:40 am in a prison van belonging to the police. The court issued the order around 12 noon.
Confirming the matter, APP’s state defender Khokon Kumar Dutt said that no attorney had presented a power of attorney for the defendant during the pretrial detention hearing in court. However, several attorneys representing the plaintiff were present at the hearing.
He further said: “The court wants to hear the statements of the defendants Saifur and Arjun as there is no lawyer for them. At the time, they told the court that they had nothing to do with the incident in the bedroom. They did not commit the crime. Rajan, Ainuddin and Tareq caused the incident. After hearing his statements, the court granted a preventive detention of five days.
ATM Fayez Uddin, President of the Sylhet District Bar Association, said: “I am not aware that anyone has produced a power of attorney on behalf of the accused. But we are also surprised by this disgusting incident. In this incident, we held a general meeting on Sunday to express our anger and strong condemnation. At the same time, I demand punishment for the accused.
He further said: ‘Why the dorm stayed open even after MC College closed. For which I demand the resignation of the director of the school and the super hostel.
Attorney Iftekhar Alam Shoaib, who appeared on behalf of the plaintiff at the hearing, said: “The investigating officer in the case requested a seven-day pre-trial detention against the two defendants. The lawyers present in the room at that time agreed with the request for preventive detention of some policemen and argued in court. Subsequently, the court granted them a preventive detention of five days.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (prosecution) Amulya Kumar Chowdhury confirmed the matter. He said the court had granted Saifur and Arjun Laskar a five-day remand in the rape case. The case also alleges extortion and looting of valuables.
Saifur Rahman, who was arrested as a plaintiff in the case of rape of a housewife in a bedroom, brought a case against a total of six people. Six people have been named as defendants in the case. At the same time, two or three more unidentified people were charged. The defendants are: M. Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Tareq Ahmed, Arjun Laskar, Rabiul Islam and Mahfuzur Rahman. Everyone is involved in the politics of the Chhatra League. Among the defendants, Tareq and Rabiul are outsiders, the rest are MC College students.
