Chhatak Police Station OC Sheikh Nazim Uddin said five policemen were injured in the attack.

“The protesters destroyed some areas of the city. The police in charge of the city attacked the members. The protesters also threw bricks at the police station building as they crossed the bank of the Surma river.”

He said the attack damaged the rotunda of the service premises of the police station building. Six people have been arrested in the incident.

Police fired 40 rounds of tear gas to control the situation, the police official said, adding that additional police officers were deployed in the municipal city. The situation is normal.

On Saturday afternoon, locals surrounded Mamunul, the deputy general secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, along with a woman in a room at the Royal Resort in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.

Later, while being interrogated, his followers “attacked and kidnapped him” at around 6:15 pm, police officials said. Later he left for Dhaka.

After the incident, Hefazat-e-Islam leaders and activists set fire to the Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 8 pm, smashing vehicles and blocking the road.

As a result, traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway stopped for a while.
