Speaking at a meeting in the capital on Sunday, GM Quader, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, said: “Some sections of the Digital Security Act are being used as a tool to repress political opponents. The crime described in some sections is not entitled to bail, which is contrary to human rights.
“We strongly demand that the provisions of the Digital Security Law be amended to defend democratic values by changing the provisions of the Digital Security Law that threaten the right of people to freedom of thought and expression and to the individual.” It is urgent to amend the Digital Security Law immediately ”.
The Digital Security Law was approved in Parliament on September 19, 2017 amid objections and concerns from journalists, lawyers, intellectuals and international human rights organizations.
Although the new Digital Security Law was enacted by repealing various sections of the Information and Communications Technology Law, including much-criticized 57, the repealed sections of the old law remain in the new law, leaving fears of a wrong application.
Recently, the Minister of Law, Anisul Haque, said that the government has no plans to amend the law now. However, he said the government was trying to find a way to stop the “abuse” of the law.
Speaking at a meeting held at the JPA president’s office in Banani, GM Quader said: “There is a need for a digital security law to curb cyber crime. This law is important. The Jatiya Party is not against the Digital Security Law. But some sections of the Digital Security Law are restrictive and are used to suppress dissent and undermine democratic rights. “
“Certain sections of the Digital Security Act restrict media freedom,” he said. The right to express one’s opinion through the media or social networks has been severely restricted ”.
“There is a lack of rule of law in the country,” he said at a meeting of the National Coordinator for the Implementation of the Japar Provincial System. Extreme inequality has been created in the country through party affiliation. That is why good governance is not guaranteed ”.
Jatiya Party co-chair Anisul Islam Mahmud chaired the meeting. Among others, the general secretary of the party, Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, the co-chairman Mujibul Haque Chunnu, the member of the presidium, Sheikh Muhammad Sirajul Islam, the Fakhrul Imam, the general secretary of the National Coordination Committee for Provincial Implementation Sunil Shubh Roy and others spoke.
