Those arrested are Saju, 21, son of Lokman Hossain from Nawab Ali Bepari Bari from East Eklashpur village, and Mozammel Hossain Sohag, 48, son of the late Golam Mostafa from Joykrishnapur village, who is a member of District 9 of Eklashpur Union Parishad.
Begumganj OC Harunur Rashid Chowdhury Police Station said Saju was arrested at Shahbagh in Dhaka and Sohag in his home area on Monday night.
The fifth defendant in the case presented in the Saju torture case. The OC said that Sohag’s name was mentioned in the statement given by the victim in court and he was also shown in custody in the case.
In this case, a total of 6 people were arrested. Earlier Sunday night, police arrested Rahim and Rahmat Ullah, the defendants in the case. On the same day, the RAB arrested Badal, the main defendant in the case, from Dhaka and Delwar Hossain, the “mastermind” of Narayanganj.
Badal has already been handed over to the Begumganj police by the RAB. Saju and Sohag, together with him, are scheduled to appear at the Noakhali Judicial Magistrates Court on Tuesday and request pre-trial detention.
The victim filed two cases against nine people under the Pornography Act and the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act at the Begumganj Model Police Station on Sunday evening.
Rahim and Rahmat were brought before Amal District Court No. 3 on Monday and the police requested a 7-day pre-trial detention in two cases. At the end of the hearing, the judge granted them preventive detention for two days in two cases.
Video of the incident went viral on social media a month after the woman was stripped and tortured in Begumganj Upazila. The 35-year-old woman was rescued and taken into police custody.
According to the case brief, the woman was staying at her father’s house in ward number 9 of Eklashpur Union due to a marital dispute. After a long time, her husband went looking for her on September 2.
At around 9 pm that day, the defendant broke down the door of his house and beat the woman’s husband and tied him up in another adjoining room. Later, they tried to rape the woman by undressing her.
When prevented from doing so, the defendant tortured him and began recording the scene on his mobile phone. According to the statement, the defendant threatened to kill the woman if people from the area showed up.
The woman is said to have taken refuge in her sister’s house in Maijdi in the district city without informing anyone. There, too, the defendant contacted him through his mobile phone and made him a ‘bad offer’. They threatened to spread the video of that night on Facebook if they did not agree.
As the woman did not agree with her words, the defendant posted the video on Facebook on Sunday afternoon and it went viral. The Begumganj OC Harunur Rashid model police station said police then took the woman out of her sister’s home and detained her.
The video, which went viral, showed several young men stripping and beating a woman. One of them grabbed the woman’s face with one foot. Despite repeated pleas, they did not stop torturing.
The High Court has already ordered the BTRC to remove the video of the torture from social media. However, as a sample of the case, it has been requested that the video be saved on a USB stick or CD.
The court also ordered the Noakhali Police Superintendent to provide all kinds of security to the abused woman and her family until the case is resolved.
The High Court has formed a three-member committee headed by the Noakhali Additional Deputy Commissioner to find out whether there was any negligence on the part of local law enforcement agencies in the overall incident, including women’s safety, statement-taking and taking legal action against the perpetrators.
The committee has been asked to report to the Clerk of the Superior Court within 15 business days. The district social services officer and the principal of Chaumuhani Government SA College have been included on the committee.
Meanwhile, in protest of the incident, various organizations are carrying out demonstrations and human chains across the country, including Noakhali. Demands are being made to arrest the oppressors and ensure their punishment.
