Half of the passengers with additional fare, getting in the car is a big fight

Dhaka: To prevent corona infection, public transportation has started operating with half of the passengers at an additional 80 percent fare to guarantee physical distance. But the government has made that decision by keeping offices, courts, industries and mills open, and passengers are suffering from the transportation crisis.

As a result, resentment has been noted among the passengers.

Passengers complained: “We welcome the government’s decision.” However, the suffering has increased because such decisions are made by keeping offices, courts and industries open. Because if public transport passengers are cut in half, additional transport will be required. If the government had made that decision, today we would not be suffering.

Sadarghat, Nayabazar, Gulistan, Paltanmore and other places in the capital were visited on Wednesday (March 31). Buses carry passengers since morning. No more than 25 passengers will be picked up on the 50 seat bus. Hundreds of passengers are suffering.

Passengers were seen waiting for transportation at various bus stops. As soon as the bus arrives at the stop, the passengers get on the bus. Many have gone to specific destinations by rickshaw, GNC as an alternative to standing for half an hour. Getting in the car is like a great battle.

Among the buses that run on the routes of Sadarghat, Gulistan, Gabtali, Mohakhali, Rampura, Badda, Shahbag, Natunbazar, Farmgate, Savar, Mirpur, Gazipur are Himachal, Ajmeri Glory, Savar Paribahan, Bihang, Victor Classic, Tanjil. Passengers cannot board buses without wearing masks, and some buses have been seen spraying hand sanitizers. However, on many buses, the increased fare is more than 70 percent or double.

Ashik Rahman, director of Victor Classic Paribahan, told banglanews that we are picking up passengers in two seats one by one. If the passengers are not wearing masks, they are not getting up. If there are more than half the assigned seats, I will leave them. I charge more rent than before. When asked how much he was taking, he said, “I am taking 60 rupees from Sadarghat to Biswaroad.” When asked how much it was before, he said, 30 rupees. Why are you taking twice as much? I have a passenger in two seats. Then the passengers will have to pay the double fare.

Speaking with Bihang drivers Tanjil and Savar Paribahan, it became known that they are charging 70% more. Passengers will not be picked up from two bus seats one by one and without a mask.

Speaking with the bus passengers, it became known that they are happy with such a decision by the government. However, it was necessary to increase the number of transports before making that decision. Passenger pressure is high during business hours. Half of the passengers were traveling during the bus crisis. To do this, passengers had to queue for a long time.

Golam Rabbani, who works for a private company in Mirpur and waited half an hour for transportation, said hundreds of passengers were waiting at the bus stop in the morning. The government should have increased the number of transports before making such a decision.

Meanwhile, Road and Bridge Transport Minister Obaidul Quader said on Tuesday (March 30) that public transport fares across the country had increased by 70 percent since Wednesday (March 31) due to the increased corona infection. The order will remain in effect for the next two weeks. If the situation is normal, the rent will return to normal.

He also gave instructions to make it mandatory to leave half of the seats empty and to wear a 100% mask and use hand sanitizer according to hygiene rules.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has issued a public notice for the new public transport. Establishes that no more than 50 percent of capacity can be transported, no more than 60 percent of existing fares can be charged, traffic between districts must be restricted in areas of high risk of infection, passengers must stop if necessary , Passengers, Drivers, Supervisors / Drivers, Assistants and Ticket Agents should ensure they wear / wear masks, have soap and water and adequate hand sanitizer to wash their hands, disinfect vehicles at the beginning and end of the trip with disinfectant , disinfect and get on and off the bus Social distance must be maintained, other hygiene rules applicable to public transport must be followed.

This instruction will remain in effect from March 31, 2021 until further notice (currently for 02 (two) weeks).

When the corona virus began to spread in the country, the government stopped all traffic as of March 21, 2020. After being closed for more than two months, the government allowed public transportation to pass with half of the passengers since June 1 of last year, subject to health conditions. Then the rent was increased by 60 percent. After a long period, Corona’s infection subsided a bit and, in September, the government allowed 100% passenger seating. From then until Tuesday (March 30), public transport was operating with 100% of passengers.
