The recommendation was made at a meeting of the Parliamentary Commission of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology held in Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday (September 23). Committee members expressed outrage at the corruption allegations against the Director General of the Postal Department, Shudhanshu Shekhar, and the fact that he went to meet with the prime minister while the coronavirus was positive.

The chair of the meeting, Benazir Ahmed, admitted the issue, told the Bangla Tribune: “All the members of the meeting have spoken on the issue. Members have called for his removal.

A press release from the Parliament Secretariat said: “The Director General of the Postal Department Sudhanshu Shekhar Bhadra expressed his disgust at the issue of corruption. At the meeting it was felt that the question of his mandate in the investigation has been questioned by all. The meeting with the Prime Minister while Corona was positive was also expressed as suspicious. Therefore, the meeting strongly recommended that he be removed from his post very soon.

According to various media reports, the postal director general visited Ganobhaban and met with the prime minister at a function even after he tested positive for coronavirus. There are also reports of corruption against the DG of the postal department. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) questioned him on September 1 as part of an investigation into allegations of embezzlement of hundreds of millions of rupees without fully implementing the Post-e-Center for Rural Community project. He is also charged with embezzlement of money from the Post-e-Center for Rural Community project, ICT-based rural post office project, building project for civil servants and employees, solar panel project, cash postcard project and corruption in the construction and bidding process of the postal department building. There are reports of misappropriation of funds.

Later in the meeting, Benazir Ahmed, a member of the presiding committee, said: “Everyone agreed at the committee meeting and recommended its removal. The ACC is investigating allegations of corruption against him. He also went to the Prime Minister’s Office despite being positive. Everyone on the committee agreed that it was not okay. These issues were discussed at the committee meeting. The talks called for his removal. Later it was also accepted as a committee recommendation.

The Director General of Posts was also present at the Parliamentary Commission meeting. However, committee member Aparajita Haque said she did not comment on the allegations.

The meeting chaired by Benazir Ahmed was attended by the ministers of State for Information and Communication Technology, Junaid Ahmed Palak, Fahmi Golandaj Babel, Ahmed Firoz Kabir, Nurul Amin, Monira Sultana, Zakia Parveen Khanam and Aparajita Haque. In addition, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Mustafa Jabbar, also attended the meeting by special invitation.
