TCB’s onion is available online at Tk 36 per kg

TCB’s onions are available on the open market and online. At 38 Tk per kg, a buyer can buy a maximum of 5 kg of onion.

On Sunday (20 September), Trade Minister Tipu Munshi launched the online onion sales program ‘Comfort Onion at Home’.

Currently, eight online companies will sell onions online in Dhaka and Chittagong. However, on Sunday five companies received the TCB online concession, which was initially selected. These are Chaldal, Swapna Online, Sindabad.com, Sabzi Bazar.com, and Verification.com. Additionally, BDsol, One Shop, and another organization can join the series starting Monday. TCB’s onions will also be sold from a common platform for women entrepreneurs called Windy.

The government has taken this initiative to curb the rise in onion prices and get middle-class buyers to buy onions online. The public will be able to purchase onions through some limited and select online stores. At present, the price of onions has been set at 38 Tk per kg. A buyer can buy a maximum of five kg of onion. For now, however, the limit has been set at three kg. In addition, the shipping price for each order has been set at a maximum of Rs 30.

Speaking as the keynote guest, the Minister of Commerce said: “We ask the general public to buy the prescribed quantity of onions online without panic. The limit has been established according to the amount of kg of onion required per week for a family. Meet this limit. If there are any irregularities, please let them know about e-cab or the coordinating committee that is here. They will be resolved quickly.

Hafizur Rahman, director general of the WTO Cell and deputy secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, who was the special guest, said that the initiative called ‘Onion of the comfort at home’ would be an example of well-being based on the cooperation of the sector private with the government. We have been successful in these initiatives before. A government welfare service is a product of TCB.

Brie, president of TCB. J. Ariful Hasan said that TCB generally caters to low-income people through the sale of trucks. But by selling onions in online stores, this opportunity has been created for buyers who may not buy the product online. The government service will connect more people through online expansion.

Additional Secretary (Import and Domestic Trade) Hafizur Rahman said: “Today started with onions. In the future, buyers can also get other TCB products online.” Although this activity has started as a pilot project today, its scope is likely to increase even further in the future.

Obaidul Azam, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, said: “We are reaping the benefits of the journey that has started online through onions today.” Our Commerce team will always attend to people from the vigil. In the future, the scope of online commodity services will be further expanded and the Ministry of Commerce will accelerate all initiatives.

“Today we have put onions online for the middle class people in collaboration with the government,” said Shami Kaiser, president of e-Cab. Each of the organizations that will work has told us that they will abide by the rules. It will follow the given rules. You will give importance to service to people than to business.

Chaldal director Ishrat Nabila said: “The government has supported the people. We have supported the government.” TCB and the Ministry of Commerce are showing that many government measures are becoming more liberal.

At the event, it was reported that the number of organizations will increase even more depending on supply and demand. At the moment, each institution will receive onions daily and will collect onions from TCB every three days. Online businesses have set an initial goal of selling 10,000 tons of onions. The amount can increase even more.

TCB dealership is awarded considering companies warehouses, delivery capacity, e-commerce website, and e-cab recommendations. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce, TCB, and e-CAB have formulated a uniform set of rules or SOPs to ensure that the entire process is completed correctly. That every institution will be obliged to comply.
