An autopsy revealed that Nurunnahar Begum, 18, a domestic worker in Tongi, was raped about 10 months after committing suicide. Her boyfriend Habibur Rahman Habib (22) raped her more than once with the promise of marriage. Tongi East police arrested Habib from Puraikhla village in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj on Monday. She later confessed to the rape during police questioning. He made a confessional statement in Gazipur court on Tuesday.
Gazipur (South) Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Iltut Mish presented this information at a press conference at the Tongi East Police Station yesterday afternoon.
According to the police, the village house of Nurunnahar and Habibur Rahman Habib is in Madhabpur. Nurunnahar worked as a domestic worker at Mosharraf Hossain’s home on Sher-e-Bangla Road in Arichpur in central Tongi. He lived in a rented house nearby. Habib used to work as a cook in a hotel next to the house. Besides being home, they have a love story. On this occasion, they went to different places and Habib had sex with Nurunnahar more than once promising to marry him. At one point in Nurunnahar, when Habib was pressured to marry, he continued to procrastinate. At that time, Habib’s family demanded a dowry of two lakh rupees from Nurunnahar’s parents. Her marriage was stopped due to her inability to pay the dowry. On January 4, Nurunnahar had an argument with Habib on his mobile phone. Habib scolded Nurunnahar. Soon after, Nurunnahar committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in his rented house. The same day an unnatural death case was filed at the Tongi East Police Station. About 10 months later, the police received an autopsy report that Nurunnahar had been sexually abused.
Nurunnahar’s father, Deen Islam, filed a case against Habib under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act at the Tongi East Police Station on Monday.
Later, a police team including SI Julhas Uddin, investigating officer in the case, arrested Habib using information technology on the instructions of police officer Iltut Mish.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Shahadat Hossain, Tongi East OC Aminul Islam Police Station, Inspector (Investigation) Zahidul Islam, ASI Omar Farooq and others were present at the press conference.
