The Dean’s Committee has made a preliminary decision not to take the admission test for unit ‘D’ of the Faculty of Social Sciences and unit ‘F’ of the Faculty of Fine Arts for the next academic year (2021-22) in Dhaka University (DU). They also said that if any university wants to, it can admit students from the DU waiting list.
Vice Chancellor of the Dean Committee meeting yesterday. Akhtaruzzaman proposed closing units ‘D’ and ‘F’. The vice-chancellor wants to have three units (a, b, and c) of the admission test in light of the three streams (science, humanities, and business education) that students study in high school. The majority of the deans present at the meeting voted in favor of the proposal. The matter will be finalized at the next meeting of the Academic Council. However, in the current academic year (2020-21), the exams will be taken in five units as per the above rules.
Although not final, the preliminary decisions of the Dean’s Committee have been published in the media. There are discussions and criticisms everywhere, including on social media.
DU Vice Chancellor on Monday at noon on these issues. Akhtaruzzaman, former Vice Chancellor. The Daily Star spoke with AAMS Arefin Siddique, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Sadeka Halim, and Physics Professor Kamrul Hasan Mamun.
Vice Chancellor DU Maryland. Akhtaruzzaman He said: “No such word was uttered at the Deans Committee meeting yesterday, what unit will remain, what unit will not. Admission will be effective through three units in the future considering the three sections in which our students study at the upper secondary level. This will create a trend-based and textbook mindset among students, reducing the stress of additional exams, the number of exams, and dependence on training.
He said, ‘The two tests are the same, that’s why the deans are thinking about it. It is not now, such preparation will be necessary taking into account the academic year 2021-22. The deans have considered the topic for this reason, so that students can orient themselves to the textbooks. This time the admission test will be carried out according to the previous rules. We take into account the problems that lie ahead so that students do not have to suddenly become familiar with any new topic. “
Why would a science student prepare for a separate general knowledge for unit “D”? He has studied Bengali and English. This decision is being made to relieve your additional stress. The deans will think more about this in the future. The way we enroll students in music and theater, the same approach will be taken for the fine arts. These are specialized creative fields, so that’s the way to go. Later, diners will sit down and figure out the strategy. That is why we have already started this speech so that the issues can emerge in a clearer and more sophisticated way, “he added.
The Vice Chancellor said: “Many may think that interdepartmental or group change may have stopped at DU, but it is not. Only one test will be taken here instead of two tests of the same nature. I also came from the science department and studied at the arts faculty. ‘
“I can’t say this part,” he said of the decision to allow other colleges to admit students from the DU waiting list. I can say our part. I don’t know this part. ‘
Former Vice Chancellor of DU Professor. AAMS Arefin Siddique He said: “I learned from the media that this is a recommendation from the Deans Committee, which will go to the Academic Council. The Academic Council will make the final decision. But I don’t know why they are making that decision. ‘
He said: ‘Each university has the authority to make individual decisions about the admission of students. No university should be told that you remove students from our waiting list. Each university is independent and autonomous. They will admit students as they please. However, if the universities want to take the admission test jointly or in a group, they can do so. The University Scholarship Commission (UGC) can coordinate a process.
“There is no way a university can talk about putting students from another university on the waiting list. They can make this proposal to UGC. Later on, UGC can play the role of coordinator there, ”he said.
Professor. AAMS Arefin Siddique said: “Students pass the upper secondary exam and take the admissions test in a specific unit for higher education in the expected subject. It is up to the university authorities to decide which qualified students can apply and take the exam in which unit. I believe that the final decision of the Academic Council should give students the opportunity to change departments. However, university authorities must consider how it will happen. However, it is recommended to keep the units option ‘d’ and ‘f’.
He said: “Since the arts education system is specialized, it is very important that you take a separate test. If students are admitted to fine arts only on the basis of grades without taking practical exams, students will not be able to participate in the study of fine arts in the true sense. Students’ creativity and drawing are more important than numbers.
Also, there are some creative departments in the faculties of social sciences and arts, such as dance, music, theater, mass communication and journalism, and there is no direct involvement in higher education with the departments of television and film studies. In that case, I think it is necessary to take a separate and special test for admission to these subjects, ‘he added.
He added: “We need to understand that the field of secondary education and higher education are not one. In that case, the university admission test should be done in such a way that students have the opportunity to pursue higher studies in the subject. The question remains how reasonable it is to reduce the unit and get admission in any subject on the basis of number.
Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, DU Professor Sadeka Halim “Yesterday there were three agendas established by the Deans Committee. This topic was not on the agenda. However, I was surprised that the matter was discussed tomorrow in the Deans Committee. Tomorrow’s discussion has been dominated by whether or not we will participate in the test on a clustered system. Since then, four universities have stated that they want to work on their own individuality. The Vice Chancellor raised the issue at the last stage of the meeting. Then I thought: I may be saying this thoughtfully, because I have seen some deans who combine the melody with the vice chancellor.
He said: ‘I am not just a dean, I am also a representative of the Faculty of Social Sciences. A vice chancellor sat in the meeting and said, and I listened: the admission test at my faculty has stopped. Drive ‘D’ has been tested here for 25 years and the reason is stated in the multidisciplinary committee’s decision. Neither I nor the Vice Chancellor are the owners of the sudden closure of the admission test of any unit in DU. The admission test of a unit cannot be stopped by force. Since there are about three hundred teachers, they also have opinions.
‘The matter will definitely come up in the Academic Council. Our teachers will give their comments there. That is why a virtual meeting has been called in our faculty at 7 pm today ”, he said.
He said: “The representative of our IT cell, the deans of the science department, said that if some university wants, they can admit students from our waiting list. They have given this advice without arguing. It’s kind of an ego and I think the jealousy of the social science faculty is leading to that decision. “
Professor Sadeka Halim said: “There is no discussion about how to improve online learning activities, how to take the admissions test using Zoom or the Google platform. Private universities are taking class tests, why not us? Without thinking about what we can do then, we said that we would not test the ‘D’ and ‘F’ units, it is amazing. ‘
He said: “I was hoping that the vice chancellor would further modernize the online education program, why can’t I take the entrance exam using the zoom platform, why can’t I give electronic devices to students, give cheap internet packages Why can’t I do it by word of mouth. ” Without going out, he talked about not taking the admission test in two units, why? What is the vice-chancellor’s job to roll back the university 100 years?
‘I think the vice chancellor has encouraged some of the professors on these matters. This we clearly understand. Such a decision is unreasonable, ridiculous and inconsistent with the achievements of DU over the last 100 years, ”he said.
Department of Physics, DU Professor Kamrul Hasan Mamun He said: ‘In our country, the opportunity to move from one department to another is completely closed. This was a small open door for science students to study economics, history or Bengali through unit ‘D’ or to study science from other departments. People cannot be imprisoned in one place. You must have freedom. If this door is closed at a young age, it will not open when he grows up. This decision has been very bad. Apparently, I don’t think there could be anything worse. The door to move from one department to another should be opened wider.
“In any case, the opportunities never diminish,” he said. There is a need to continue improving people’s access to education. I don’t understand why they are going to introduce such a system, whose decision comes from.
‘Why would another university take students from the DU waiting list? This decision means that DU is the best. First, we will take it first, then those who are waiting can take it if others want. The second thing is: I’m in Hannover! However, one possibility was to involve other universities in conducting entrance exams through the group system. With that announcement, that possibility was killed. Now no one will come around here. Instead, the DU administration should have discussed the issue with other universities and found a logical solution, “he added.
