The police sent Habibur Rahman, 80, to jail for matching his name.
On Sunday, the Patuakhali Galachipa Police Station, ASI Al-Amin, arrested the elderly man at his home in the Banani area of Galachipa. Later that day, he was sent to jail on a check designer case.
According to the case, the owner of Nahar Garments on Sadar Road adjacent to the Galachipa Police Station. Habibur Rahman, Father Nur Mohammad Master, a resident of Mujibnagar Road, Galachipa Municipal City. He obtained a loan of Taka 120,000 from BRAC on August 8, 2012 in favor of his business.
At that time, he deposited a check payable to BRAC at the Galachipa branch of Uttara Bank for the same loan amount as his own account (Account No. 2200). But because he did not repay the loan on time, BRAC authorities deposited Habibur Rahman’s check at the bank on April 10, 2013. He was disgraced because there was not enough money in it.
Later, the BRAC authorities sent him a legal notice on May 2, 2013. But he informed the BRAC authorities in writing on June 19, 2013 that he had not taken any loans from BRAC. They filed a case against borrower Habibur Rahman in court.
The Patuakhali Joint Session Judge, Jinnah Jahan Jhunu, delivered the verdict on March 25, 2016. The verdict sentenced Habibur Rahman to one year in prison and a fine of twice the amount of the loan, or 240,000 taka.
The court issued an arrest warrant for Habibur Rahman, as he was absent on the day of the verdict. According to the arrest warrant, ASI Al-Amin from the Galachipa Police Station arrested Habibur Rahman, 60, from the Galachipa Banani area from his residence on Sunday and sent him to Patuakhali Jail the same day. Habibur Rahman’s father’s name is Nur Mohammad Pandit.
Borrower Habibur Rahman closed his business on Sadar Road adjacent to the Galachipa Police Station about 5 years ago and started a new business on Mahila College Road. The type of business has changed and now he has started a grocery business.
Habibur Rahman’s son in jail in this regard. Abu Saleh said: “My father never did business on Sadar Road and we did not take any loans from any institution.” The two brothers work in a garment factory in Dhaka. I send money every month to support my parents. With that they run the family. The matter was reported to the police but they did not listen.

In this regard, ASI Al-Amin from the Galachipa Police Station said: “We arrested him and sent him to jail due to an arrest warrant issued by the court in one case.” But then I found out that he is not the real culprit. The subject is sad and I was wrong. But I’m trying to free the innocent old man from jail.
In this context, the OC Police of Galachipa said. Monirul Islam said ASI Al-Amin arrested the defendant in good faith as his name and his father’s name matched. We have already sent a letter to rectify the matter and steps are being taken to release the elder immediately.
