India may face US sanctions

India could face US sanctions if it buys S-400 anti-missile systems from Russia.

The warning was given in a report by an investigation-based organization in the United States Congress. A year and a half have passed since the country’s Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo warned about it, the Indian Express reported.

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) report made it clear that if India ignores the US warning and concludes a deal with Russia to purchase S-400 missiles, sanctions may be imposed against New Delhi.

In such a scenario, India could lose its status as a major defense ally of the United States.

The report says that despite Washington’s cooperation, including joint defense production, India is rapidly acquiring defense technology.

The S-400 first enlisted in the Russian army in 2006. In 2014, Delhi contacted Moscow to purchase the anti-missile system.

In October 2016, India signed a বিল 5 billion deal to purchase S-400 technology from Russia.

India had previously told the United States that it could not cancel the ৫ 5 billion S-400 missile deal with Russia.

In 2019, the Trump administration announced that canceling the S-400 deal with Russia would give India a high altitude area defense (THAD) and a Patriot-3 missile defense. But the Narendra Modi government did not accept that proposal.

The United States has warned that India will have to pay the price if it decides to buy state-of-the-art missile defense systems from Russia. In addition, economic sanctions have been threatened.

In 2016, the Trump administration enacted the Anti-American Adversaries Act through sanctions.

Under the law, the United States could impose sanctions on a country if it buys weapons or military equipment from Russia, Iran and North Korea.
